Invalidity pension

I got my form back from my GP today and it says I should be able to return to work in 12-18 months. My last form I got done a few months ago for illness benefit he put that I’d be out indefinitely. I’m also apparently a lot better going on the boxes he ticked which is strange considering my consultant on Wednesday said I’m way worse. Am I wasting my time sending it in? I’m due to hit my two years on illness early next year and don’t know what I’m going to do now.

    No you're not.

"Medical criteria: Invalidity Pension is a payment for insured people who are permanently incapable of work because of an illness or incapacity.

    To qualify you must:

Have been incapable of work for at least 12 months and be likely to be incapable of work for at least another 12 months (you may have been getting Illness Benefit or Disability Allowance during that time)

So if your doctor certifies that you'll be incapable of work for at least another 12 months - which he has - then you should be OK. If you're turned down, then appeal immediately and ask the consultant for a letter.

Thanks for that. I’m sending it off today. Just worrying about what I’ll do if I don’t get it as my illness benefit is running out and I genuinely can’t go back to work at the moment.

You immediately lodge an appeal and then apply for supplementary benefit from what used to be called (and still should be, IMHO) your local Community Welfare Officer.
