Who were Solas, a proffesinal comnpany or some left wing splinter steering group from Macknass group ? Only in Galway can 8-10 million of public funds be missappropiated and no one brought to stand for it

You will need to elaborate on this.

At least the banks are not a trifling matter! :D That one cinema for arty types swallowed so much money and time to lay the proverbial egg speaks of rank incompetence on so many levels.

Not defending the spending of public funds in this case really, but 10 million is just a drop in the ocean in the bigger picture, but I do disagree with the notion that just cos something is "artsy" that it is therefore devoid of any real value.

If Galway, supposed arty and bohemian city, cannot support an art house cinema, then that doesn't reflect well on Galway at all...

...given the fiasco with Solas, I dont hold out much hope for Galway 2020. The city and those who run and dominate its cultural life have become smug, bloated and tired. Time to give them a boot on their backsides and bring in new blood and inject new life and ideas.

Galway can't sell itself as an arty haven forever. Planning wise, the city is a disaster with shocking sprawl and car usage choking the city to death.

Last I checked cities with thriving arts scenes tend to be a cut above the rest in terms of good sustainable town planning, public transport and urban governance. New thinking is badly needed.
