BL Degree (Kings Inn) - without devilling

    Hi everyone.

Sorry if this question has been answered before, but I'm continually getting conflicting information regarding completing the barrister at law degree without pursuing any devilling training.
I'm currently a legal exec in a corporate law firm and I've been told a BL would be great on your CV even if you don't do any devilling. I'm also being told that one can act as in-house legal counsel with a BL degree without having devilled?

I'm aware of the solicitors route but that would mean I would need to give up my job (they don't do trainee contracts), I'm in my mid 30s and I need to work to pay the bills. I have a qualifying LLB degree for the Kings Inns and I would ultimately like to work in a role similar to legal counsel but I'm surprised one would not need any devilling experience before undertaking a role like this? The solicitors route has around 2 years of training aside from all the exams!

Also, I often hear its great for business and the civil service but can anyone mention specific roles that require the BL? I've searched job postings and it's never listed. I'm interested in furthering my career but it's nice to know what roles I could aim for.

I would appreciate any clarification on the above or indeed any credence to the above, especially being to able to work in house as legal counsel having only completed the BL degree.

    Thanks

Many people are admitted to the BL degree and do not go on to devil. Some obtain in house employment in a legal capacity. The only restriction on in house counsel who are not solicitors is that they cannot brief counsel. It is entirely up to the employer to employ who they wish and with whatever qualifications they want.

You can absolutely do the BL Degree and not go on to devil. This is very common with civil servants, members of the Gardaí and so on. However, the majority of in-house counsel positions require the applicant to have at least 3-5 years post qualification experience (looking at a recent job advertisement on the Central Bank website for a junior legal advisor position which expired earlier this month).

So, by all means do the degree, which is well respected, but be aware that just the degree alone won't cut it as experience as a lawyer so to speak. I see you are a legal executive currently and that experience will stand to you. As mentioned above it will really depend on the employer and whether they want the applicant to have experience working as a qualified lawyer as a job requisite or experience simple working in a law firm for example. From my experience, it is the former.
