    Hi.

The missus is looking at a 2014 Vauxhall Astra 1.6i 16V Limited Edition petrol hatchback.
Anyone any experience with this model? Anything in particular to be wary of?

    Thanks a million.

That model Astra is quite a heavy car so it might be worth finding a 1.4 turbo which would have a bit more power.

Thanks for the reply bazz - I've seen 1.4 turbos also alright.
You reckon they would be a better buy than the 1.6?
I know little or nothing about Astras I have to say.

1.4 turbo has either 120bhp or 140bhp, has more torque and has lower emissions meaning lower VRT.

Just wondering have you any experience of buying privately in the Uk?
I've seen a newer model 1.4 Astra on AutoTrader.co.uk (it changed at some stage in 2015 by the look of it) which is being sold privately.
The price seems quite low in comparison to other new model petrols so am a bit sceptical of it.
If we were to get it inspected and it came back okay from that - would you have any worries about proceeding?
    Thanks again for any advice.
    Much appreciated.

The 1.4t astra k has a fiat engine which was subject to a known rattle noise issue so worth checking that.

I just noticed that it was considered a write off . Not sure what the implications will be for insuring it

Ad says it is a Category S write off.

"Category S. At some point this vehicle suffered structural damage, probably in an accident, and has subsequently been written off by the insurer as it was uneconomical to repair. This damage could be to any part of the vehicle’s structural frame including the chassis. The decision to apply Category S to this vehicle was dependent on the level of damage and on the age and condition of the vehicle.Category S vehicles may be repaired and put back on the road."

    Thanks for that.
I obviously missed it on the advert :-(
The price looked unrealistic from the start.

    To resurrect this thread :-)
SWMBO has pretty much decided on an Astra for her next car.
She just wants to make sure she gets one with leather seats and parking sensors.
In terms of models - I had narrowed it down to a 1.4 petrol (thanks bazz).

I have also read recently a little bit about the 1 litre turbo petrol engine - just wondering if anyone has any experience of these engines?
Are they very sluggish in terms of overtaking etc. in comparison to the 1.4?

1.0 engine should only be in the new model astra 2016+ .

New model is lighter so depending on where you are coming from it may be sufficient.

    New Model Astra
    1.0 lt turbo(105ps) astra 0-100km 10.9 second (manuel) - 11.9 second (automatic)
    1.4 lt non turbo (100ps) 0-100 km 12.6 second
    1.4 lt turbo(150 hp) 0-100 km 7.8 second

The new model is infinitely better if you can stretch to one of those you’d have a far better car. The older model was far too heavy and poorly dimensioned.

Be careful of the new type Astra, was in a main dealers a few weeks ago and they had 5 of them with brake fluid leaks , and a 4 week minimum wait for the parts
