Tourism VAT increase 2019

    Hi there,

Getting married in April 2019. Got an email yesterday from our hotel asking us to call them regarding the VAT increase and how this will affect the cost of our wedding.
Our contract terms do not mention price subject to VAT or anything like that. Can we contest this if they decide to increase our price? I think it's most unfair to agree a price and decide to increase it five months prior to the date.

Howdy, the hotel would have given you a quote that includes vat at 9%, Unfortunately due to the vat increase they will be obliged to charge you VAT at 13.5%

If you could pay them before the end of the year they may be able to account for it this year and they may be able to charge 9%, but you’d need to explore that with them.

    Thanks for your response.
Should they not pay the difference themselves as the wedding is already booked and price agreed?
If I booked a hotel room for April 2019 in September 2018, I wouldn't expect the price to increase after the budget, so how is this any different?

Every contract will have something in their conditions regarding changes in tax or changes outside their control.

Vat change will not affect any wine as that is still 23%.

But considering that this was a sure thing months in advance of the budget, hotels should have priced it in.

I have an event booked for April and been told they will abide by the agreed price.

I'd suggest to them that you are on a very tight budget and can't afford it. You need to get them to want to help you, as legally they can impose the extra vat.

In such a case you would have ticked a box saying that you agreed to terms and conditions. In those, tax changes would be part of it.

Back in 2011 when the 9% rate came in, I was pleasantly surprised when a break I had booked in Harvey's point in Donegal was charged at a lower price when checking out. So it works both ways
