Where did this stupid phrase come from?

Every interviewee on TV or radio seems to use it these days, it's everywhere and seems to be quite a recent thing.

So what are you actually saying?
That you normally lie all the time but you've decided to make an exception for this question?

What a load of complete and utter bollox !

Look, listen, when it comes down to it, at the end of the day, when all is said and done, it is what it is.

If I'm being honest, this is a stupid thread.

It sets whatever you're about to say as an honest opinion, not a slag.

If you're friend shows you something they've made and it's nonsense, then it eases in the criticism.

Yes but it's not used like that in media interviews, footballers and ex-footballers are especially guilty, it's like the have an involuntary tick, it sounds so stupid.

I think this has been around a while.

The new one seems to be "not gonna lie"

I don't think it's something I say, or have noticed. Seems pretty benign. Just a figure of speech.

Language is merely a tool to communicate and people pick up their vernacular all over the place.

It's the verbal equivalent of wearing a suit and tie - it dresses up your speech so you blend in and don't look like the unrefined weirdo you actually are.

It's like when people say 'No offense but..'.
And then an onslaught of offense occurs :P

It's like every time you hear a GAA player being interviewed, every answer is prefaced with "look it".

    Glazers Out!

A guy tried that at work

    “no offence but ...”

To which I responded before he continued.

“I’ll be the judge of the offense, thanks”.

He wasn’t offensive as it happens. Just a phrase he commonly used.
