    Hi,
I am looking to buy two vintage watches, one from 1943 and one form 1948. I was looking at Omega and Longines or IWC. Is there any where in particular that anyone can recommend to buy from, or is ebay and adverts the best places to be keeping an eye on. Also is there anything to be on the look out for in regards to avoiding fake pieces from around that time.

any help would be great thanks

Longines would likely be the cheapest of the three brands. They're also pretty easy to date by serial number. As for where to look... Dealers are generally safer but you will pay a hefty premium for that. Ebay can bring out some nice examples, but you really want to have some idea what you're doing and have the knowledge to not fall for a bad example, one with the wrong parts or an outright fake. Also be aware that with few enough exceptions(usually military stuff, so more expensive) watch sizes back the were much smaller than fashion would be used to today.

Rejoice in the awareness of feeling stupid, for that’s how you end up learning new things. If you’re not aware you’re stupid, you probably are.

Is there somewhere good to be able to research for example a vintage omega to see what to be aware of, I have looked at their website but do not find it very helpful, just don't want to fall in to the easy traps that beginners make

Brand websites are usually not so great for this kinda thing. Naturally, they want to sell you a new one. :)www.omegaforums.net is a very good resource, but you've some reading to do.

Watchuseek, Watchpatrol and Chrono24 are sites to get you started. The bargains are at junk shops, flea markets, estate sales and auctions.

Antique Watch Co (based in London) have a lot of vintage watches available online, think last time I checked they had 40+ Omega. That might be a good place to get in touch with. Especially with sterling being more favourable for us at the moment.

had spent a bit of time looking at chrono24, never heard of watchpatrol will give it a look thanks, chrono 24 seems very good, but my god does it give you some temptations, if not for the better half, I would probably be wearing a PP from that site, some incredible watches on it, and not insane prices either, but would be sleeping under a bridge if I had, still though???, wife or watch, decisions decisions.
