Funny experiences in betting?

Any funny experiences with people betting?

I used to work with a fella and you'd always hear from him the day after a round of games:
'I was in the bookies and I was going to back x, y and z @ 10/1 but I never did. They all won and I'd have won [insert stupid figure here].'

A friend of mine went down to the bookies with the same gentleman one day on his lunch break and there was one of those coupon sheets in the shop for horse racing where you just fill a box and give it in.
This same fella saw this sheet and started to pretend he knew it all, going like:
'Oh yeah this horse will suit this course'
    and Yadda, Yadda, yadda.
Yer man went up to the counter to discover that it was a coupon sheet left behind from the day before, those horses had already ran :D

Those are just my experiences but I'm sure there's better. Would particularly love to hear from a few bookmakers.

I've a story, although a bit long.... maybe save it for a toilet time read!

I once worked in a bookies over in Liverpool, and was working on the night of the 2005 Champs League final in Istanbul - Liverpool v AC Milan.

The bookies was mental before kick off, everyone backing liverpool to win over 90mins, except for a few bitter Everton fans of course! The shop emptied when the match started, everyone heading into the pub next door to watch it.

When Liverpool went 3-0 down the place filled back up again, most of them losing faith, coming back in to bet on a the dogs and virtual horses, anything to cheer themselves up and take their mind off the football.

At half time I didn't take any bets on the match, but the shop was quite busy again. Then one lad walks up shouting his mouth off, "£50 on Liverpool to win on penalties". He had a few beers in him, I thought he was joking, just saying something to get a laugh out of the boys.

A few laughs went round the shop, some rolling their eyes at him. But he puts the £50 on the counter and scribbles it on a bet slip, it was 200/1. Probably should have been more, but it was a manual betting shop in those days, and in-play markets were a bit limited.

This lad and most of the others headed back into the pub for the second half, but quite a few stayed in the shop as they had given up hope or lost interest. We had the game on with no sound, so they were able to keep an eye on it.

The first goal went in, then the second, and the shop completely emptied again, everyone heading into the pub to see history being made.

We closed up the shop at full time and headed into the pub to watch extra time and penalties.

The fella who made the bet was bouncing round the place, not in a good way, he was so nervous as he could see the 10 grand was so close yet so far. It really sobered him up..

When the last penalty was saved the place erupted and yer man went clean mad. He was on top of the bar and everyone was going mental, he ended up getting carried out of there on shoulders, straight to the city centre where thousands were celebrating on the streets. He ended up a hero that night.

As the shop was closed he had to wait until the next day to get his money, and he gave me his bet slip to keep safe. He didn't want to go partying all night in Liverpool with a slip of paper in his pocket worth 10k!!

I enjoyed counting out the 10K for him the next day, I realised that I was pretty much paying him from all the pre-match takings where most fans had backed liverpool over 90 minutes. Bookies never lose eh!

I knew a fella and he got his hands on 30k. Lost every penny. Started off by putting 3 k on Chelsea to beat Arsenal. Easy money he said.

Then he hit the casino with the remainder to make back the 3 k.

It didn't end well. Actually this is a very very sad betting story.

I heard a story about a guy who put a £ 225,000 (sterling) on a team who were 4-0 up approaching half time and lost.

Arsenal had gone 4-0 up after about 30 minutes in a game against Newcastle United at St James's Park in 2011 and held that lead up until about the 65th minute or so.

Newcastle scored 4 goals to earn a 4-4 draw.

Your man had lashed the bet on around about half time.

There was also a story about that came to light after the game between Everton and West Ham where Paolo Di Canio caught the ball when he could have scored.

A guy had a 10 bet accumulator on all 10 premier league games.

He had 9 correct. It turned out that if Paolo Di Canio has just knocked the ball into the net, as he would have been perfectly entitled to do, your man would have won his bet.

I don't know what kind of prize your man would have won but it was definitely significant.

We call a mate of mine Richard The Third. Every time he comes out of the bookies he claims the horse he backed has come third.

Good enough for him . If they were 4 nil up they were Probaly 1 to 100 if not shorter . So he was risking 225 k for 2 k served him right . Pure greed

I don't know if that story is true - it might be about this game.
It was reported on Betfair that someone backed Angola £40000 with 15 minutes to go. when they were 4-0 up against Mali
The odds were, as you have stated there, 1/100, so he stood to make £400 before Betfair tax.

    This was the outcome
    Angola 4-4 Mali
    (Flavio 36, 42; Gilberto 67; Manucho 72)
    (Keita 79, 90+3; Kanoute 88; Yattabare 90+4)
2 goals in injury time !!!

That was the English Uni student. Had just got his student loan in that day (maybe £4000) and wanted to win some quick & easy money for a night out that night - £40.

Not that funny but a serious sweat for myself.

Back in 2013 I was drunk and watching the champions League final
with friends at home and I made a comment id throw 500 on Munich to win.

My buddy deared me to do it and I did online (only because I was drunk :( and foolish

I remember them being 1/2 on so I was to profit 250.

For 60 odds minutes I was so worried as it was 0 0 then Munich went 1 up and I went ****ing mental and was delighted but only to have my heart shattered a few mins later when Dortmund scores for 1 1.

    I was gutted

I thought my money was gone because Munich had to win within the 90.

then Robben pops up and scores in the 89th minute

I absolutely roared the house down with joy(more stress relief) and promised never ever to put that pressure on myself again ha.

    It wasn't even that I won 250 but more so I didn't lose 500 .

    I was thrilled.

    A fortunate outcome that time.
