They are nice, but if I had a grand to spend on a new watch, they'd be far down the list.

Same. I wouldn't be forking out that much on a watch like that.

My inner republican conscience wouldn't allow me to wear one :P

They're Irish? And share a name with a very famous unit of the British Army?

Stands for Sea, Air & Sport, I doubt the coincidence ever even occurred to them.

Perhaps, the alternative of course is that they don't care, Ireland is probably not a very big market for them.

Although where the market for a quite expensive micro brand that no-one has heard of is, I have no idea.

It's not really about Ireland being a small market. They're an Irish company.

Imagine a British company naming their brand I.R.A., help me out here with an acronym lads and lassies.

    Indigo Red Amber

I was just going to say the same. I'm trying to sell a Tag on chrome24, and my pics are better than them.

They should have gone with Air, Sea and Sport.

Actually was part of a UK based group with that acronym that hadn't thought of it and a few people called the group IRA in posts and lots of people had no idea what the issue was! It's been changed now but it was like that for years!

Be amazed if these guys didn't think about it and just used it as a way of making the brand look a certain way.

    1. Watches are nice
    2. Seem very expensive for a micro brand
    3. As an Irish company what were they thinking with that name
    4. Regardless of where they are from what were they thinking with that name. SAS is already taken lads. It would be like starting BBC, FBI, KGB or KFC Watches. Those initials are internationally known already. You can’t just start a company with such a famous already known name.

The name is naff, but I haven't see any objection on this forum to watches that have an actual association with the British armed forces - CWC watches, Rolex milsubs (and the various homages), Citizen Red Arrows or Royal Marine Commando models etc.

    Wouldn't touch a Breitling myself

Not to get too political but of all the units for an Irish watch to share a acronym with it’s possibly the worst. Maybe PARA watches?

I don't quite understand why all the diver watches are all black, I hate that look, but looking at their gallery it seems they sell plain steel versions. They're not really my thing, too large and I don't like the strap style. I would wonder how active they really are, none of the watches go into my 'cart' when I attempt to buy. Too pricey, and a very crowded watch market makes it hard to see how they'll survive.

I looks like they are aiming at the military market, hence the name, though obviously they have no idea of the history of that unit in Ireland.

Plus with what our military guys get paid along with the fact we've quite a small force it's hard to see the logic. Maybe they the the UK as their main market?

Or is it aimed at people who wish they were in the military?

I think it's great to see Irish people taking the initiative to set up an indigenous company whatever the name. Fair dues, we need more of them.

Here's a shot from one of our GTG seven years(!!!) ago with another Irish brand....

Crikey I was at that GTG if memory serves! I can’t find photos from 7 months ago let alone 7 years ago :D

Thanks for that link B.. it wasn’t that one I was at but a subsequent one that featured an appearance from someone from both SAS and McGonigle!

It's hard to object to a watch with an ETA 6498. At 44mm with a pillow or cushion case shape it's a very big watch to me.

I have a preference for 36mm watches. I'm currently wearing a Marathon GSAR (Canadian government search and rescue) Medium, 36mm, Sellita sw200 automatic mechanical as my daily beater. It's very accurate, bullet proof tough, waterproof to 300 meter, screw down crown.

I'm definitely not a military type person but it's a watch I can wear daily, in the shower or bath, and bang around with no problem. Swiss made, 100 year old company. I paid $540. So I say the price of the SAS is high.

I like the look of the marathon:) very nice watch, where did you source from?

Porker, I got it from Optics planet but I used a site wide 10% off discount sale coupon to get it at $540 (€476). A lot the camping and military sites sell it discounted from the $850 MSRP.

I've had dive watches before, Rolex submariner, and my first Swiss watch was the original Zodiac Sea Wolf I bought new in 1965 when I was ocean diving a lot.

This Marathon GSAR I am really very happy with though I have more high end watches. It's working out great as a daily beater and it looks much better in person than the online photos. If I happen to see a deal on one I'll let you know.

I'm guessing if you were active in the millitary you go with a quartz gshock, definitely not a mechanical watch
