Independent contractor tax query

    Hello,
I’m starting a new job tomorrow (my first time as an independent contractor under an umbrella company). The thing is that my last employer has asked if I’d help out with some work in my spare time.

As an independent contractor I’m classed as self-employed so is it possible to also be employed very part-time by my previous employer for maybe 2-4 hours a week i.e. a fulltime contractor but also employee.

    Any and all advice welcome.

Taxes will be based on the fulltime role but can I be both?

    Thank you!

Yes. You can have self-employment, PAYE employment(s), directorship on PAYE. You could even throw in a partnership as well. The taxation for each will be dealt with according to the rules of PAYE or self-employment. Ultimately all will end up on your tax return at year end with credit for any tax/prsi/usc deducted through The PAYE system and direct payment through self-assessment for the rest.
