2012 Ford Focus - alarm going off periodically

I have a Ford Focus Estate (2012 1.6 TDCI Zetec)

The alarm in the car has started to go off periodically for apparently no reason. Most of the time at night. I have started disabling the internal sensor (from steering wheel control) when turning off the ignition after which I still lock the car with the fob but it still goes off some nights but I think less often.

I haven't brought it anywhere yet as it's so intermittent I think might be hard to debug but think it is getting to the point where I need to.

Any ideas before I go this route?

When did it start going off? It it started in the recent cold weather then it could be an indication that your battery is on it's way out. I'd start by having your battery tested.

    Thanks.

No, started in mid-late summer but has increased in frequency since then.
No other indications that batter might be weak. Have put a meter on it and started car and it stayed pretty consistent.
Was away for a week and had battery disconnected(because of above issue) and when I reconnected, it started immediately.

Check to see if there is a moth in the car. I know that sounds crazy but a moth got trapped in my husband's car and the alarm started to go off at night when the moth was flying around like a crazy thing and setting of the sensors. Took some effort to get it out at 2am!

Although seeing your 2nd post of it happening over a prolonged period of time it probably makes a moth less likely as I doubt it would survive that long. Still worth investigating just in case though.

    No. Not crazy.

Initially thought that that was it (fly rather than moth) as it was during the summer and the windows were frequently open.

If a fly is still responsible at this stage, he must have a set of keys. And earmuffs.

Mmm, I'd say that's more than a coincidence. Maybe check the battery terminal points/cables for dirt or corrosion?

When I say it started immediately , I mean the car started immediately (indicating battery healthy) not the problem.

The terminals appear to be fine (for a car of that age).
