Contacting employer

I was approached by a recruitment agency to interview for a position whereby the company had specifically asked for me. The role subsequently changed and it didn't suit either party.

Is it appropriate for me to email the company director to thank him for his time and to keep me in mind for other opportunities? He gave me his business card on the day.

    Sure, nothing wrong with that.

Totally appropriate. Always keep doors open where you can!

Always maintain your own contacts, especially if given a business card.

In fact, in the very few times I've turned down a job offer I have reached out directly to the interviewer/hiring manager with my decision (and CC'd the agent).

The reason: agents will massively misrepresent your reasons for decline to suit their own agenda. You can tell how much they would have done so by how pissed off they are after you do that.

Call don't email. Much more personal imho.

Much harder to look back on though. Email is much better as there is a record and it can be reread.

If you really want to ring send an e-mail afterwards confirming what was said.

The next opportunity maybe a year or 2 away so not as likely to recall a phone conversation but more likely to have kept the email.
