Diesel automatic transmission, regen?

    If driving a diesel automatic, to kick off a DPF regen on a long drive, do you need to put into semi automatic and get revs up high?

    Depends what car you're driving.

    Im sure if you consult your owners manual for DPF it will give you the specifics.

    In my previous car, the revs needed to be above 2200rpm , vehicle speed above 60kmh and car needed to be up to full operating temp and have a certain amount of fuel left in the tank for it to trigger a passive regen.

    Since anything modern enough to have a DPF would have an electronically controlled gearbox, I'd imagine when a DPF regen is required it would change the ratios or gear changes accordingly.

    The car is designed to regenerate unbeknownced to the user so just drive the car and it should be fine. If the user was meant to implement a regeneration, they'd have installed a button.

    On mine (3L TDI A6) I've been advised to run it in 4th for 40km at motorway speed.

    I do it occasionally as despite living mostly on the motorway anyway, it has gotten a bit smoky at times. It's barely doing 2000 rpm at 120 though so that may be why?

    If there are conditions to be satisfied to kick off regeneration, they may never be satisfied with short drives. I guess OP is after that for his car.

    I know it is improving with newer models to tackle with that problem but that was certainly an issue in earlier cars so people had to go to dealer for forced regenaration after it throws an error and driving hard on motorway didn't solve the issue.

    I will do regular (couple a month) long motorway trips. It is just if I need to put the car in semi automatic for those trip and get rev ups or just drive as normal.

    Can't find an definitive advice so will drive as normal.

    Depends on the car most you can do is making sure exhaust temperature reaches to certain point and stays there for a while. Going at lower gears will make it quick but if you are going to be on motorway for 2 hours then you shouldn't need any extra effort than just driving it.
