Insurance company claiming car was badly damaged previously

Father in law bought a second hand 161 from a car dealership.
He paid for a full car history check on cartell before purchasing it and it reported no issues...dealer didn’t report any issues either.

He called for an insurance quote for it today and was told that they won’t quote as the car was listed as too uneconomically viable to repair after been damaged somehow!
He needs to call them back next week and ask for more details.

Is cartell completely reliable and accurate with it reports?

It could be an error on cartells side but I suppose it's unlikely.

Was it from a main dealer or an independent dealer? Uneconomical to repair doesn't necessarily mean unsafe to repair but at the same time if a 3 year old car was written off as an uneconomical repair the damage must have been extensive, so you'd want to have paid less than the going rate for an undamaged car but I suspect that isn't the case.

Independent dealer and deal he got was ok, nothing major.

Cartell and motorcheck should stand over their information and give a warranty if their reports fail to mention something important. HPI do it in the UK.

Only problem with that is insurance companies in Ireland don’t want to share their write off info whereas they do openly in uk. Mot in uk freely share mileage reading and Nct here don’t. How can any of them offer warranty when enough info isn’t made available freely by those who have it.

Thanks for that Mintoe, I’ll let the father in law know..I think he’ll be straight down to the dealer Tuesday morning looking for a full refund.
Possibly a question for different discussion, but is he entititled to a full refund?

No idea if he’s entitled to refund or not but I’d imagine best thing would see what dealer says/is willing to do and decide from there. Maybe someone else on here can shed any light on what ur father in law is entitled to?

    Was the vehicle imported?

So here are parts of cartell report, nothing mentioned about any damage.
The report was shared by the dealer via cartell reports site.

This is crazy that they could miss something as important as this, it’s what’s your paying them money for after all.

those check sites can be wrong.

I used one of them, can't remember which to check a car i was considering and it came back with a big mileage discrepancy ( not a km instead of miles error), dealer was surprised and then showed me his check on his computer clear? I watched him log in and enter reg.

Needless to say i left the car with him.

Yeah hopefully he’s decent and just agrees to a full refund without hassle.
    According to this from ccpc:
When you buy from a dealer, the car should be:
    1. Of merchantable quality – it should be of reasonable, acceptable quality given the age and history of the car
    2. Fit for the purpose intended and roadworthy
    3. As described – it should match the description given verbally or in an advertisement.

    https://www.ccpc.ie/consumers/cars/your-rights-if-things-go-wrong/

Clearly not roadworthy if insurance companies won’t insure it due to serious damage

Has he only just got the car?

Ive seen this before as in someone buys a car, Cartell showed it as complelty clean but the insurers system was able to flag it had previously been written off. It's good practice for people to check with their insurance company before purchasing any new car, if for nothing else to see how it affects the existing premium.

Can I ask the make or model of this car?

If it fits a rental car and is an Irish car there's a good chance it was damaged and auctioned off by the rental company. The rental company didn't claim the car but a third party insurer did, which may have taken quite some time to register on the Cartel system but the claim would show up on the insurers own database.

“If it fits a rental car” that’s a broad range of cars then, almost any car could be a rental car by that logic. Also I’ve seen rentals cars that were originally uk cars as the rental company here brought them in from their parent uk company when they were only weeks old. Also rental companies self insure meaning no claim can can show up on a third party insurance claim basis.

    Yeah just last week

If he only bought it from dealer last week why was it in private persons name for only 4 months after dealers had it for 10 months. Also it hasn’t been taxed since last year which the new owner 4months ago didn’t tax it and possibly gave it back to dealer as it had “issues”

Yeah I’m not sure about that, all I know is father law bought it from the dealer.
Could the the second owner be the actual dealer registering it?
Bit unusually that they would wait 10 months though, suggests to me something dodgy went on

No dealer movements won't register as owners.

So there would be record of it been transferred back to dealer if second owner gave it back?

Only if dealer decided to but they don’t always

Dealer told the father in law verbally that there was no previous damage to it as well as providing the cartell report.
If somebody bought it and gave it back within 4 months then my guess is they discovered something wrong with it.
My gut tells me the dealer knows more than he is letting on.
Very Interested to hear what he has to say on Tuesday, either way I think father in law should just ask for full refund.

Did the dealer give the cartell report or did your father in law run the report?

    Dealer forwarded report for cartell.

    Never thrust the dealer report

I have got 2 reports from the dealers. Both times when checking into them they turned out to be incorrect.

Don't ask me how they do it but they fiddle the report so it is useless

For the couple of quid you are better off running the report yourself....Go to any dealer on the Naas road, majority of cars are clocked and they will all offer you a report for the car so you dont have to run it yourself
