FTTH in Cork City

    Hi there,

I've moved from the UK and am trying to get my head around the FTTH options. I'm in an area enabled for FTTH, which is great - but I've been banging my head against a brick wall trying to get information out of Eir. From what I've found on boards.ie. I think people here are going to know the answers! So .....

    1. I'm get that all exchanges are effectively eir exchanges (just like they were BT exchanges in the UK). But for FTTH in Ireland, can a provider take advantage of LLU, or is that only for xDSL services?

    2. I've tried asking eir for the following information - (1) upload speeds across their packages, (2) fees for requesting one or many static IPs, and (3) what do I get as a business FTTH customer vs. a Residential? I understand the upload speeds now, but they cannot tell me the answer to the other two questions. Does anyone here know?

    3. I'm looking at Digiweb / Pure Telecom & Magnet as the likely providers. Does anyone have any advice on these three providers for FTTH? And do you know if they offer a Modem only option? I have my own wifi kit and router/firewall I want to use.

    Thanks,
    Chris

LLU doesnt exist with fibre, concept doesnt make sense. Its virtually unbundled.

Eir sell you a static at fixed cost or at least they used to. Vodafone rent you them. SME = Residential, dont bother unless you're going to double your bill to get an 8HR SLA.

Do you need VOIP from your provider? If not they're all using an OpenEir ONT which you can connect whatever you want to as long as it can VLAN tag.

LLU for FTTH is not quite as easy, as it's a shared connection to the premises. Any 31/32 premises hanging of the same fibre.

However, there are several providers available, that use OpenEIRs (Eirs wholesale counterpart, who owns the network) including Eir, that sell FTTH on that network. The list is here: https://fibrerollout.ie/rollout-map/where-to-buy/

Any of the providers with a little house logo will do FTTH. Some may not do it nationwide.

The FTTH profiles on the OpenEIR network are 150/30, 300/50 and 1000/100.

Magnet doesn't do FTTH on OpenEIR. They have their own little FTTH rollout in Dublin.

The way FTTH is presented in Ireland is ethernet. Traffic arrives tagged with Vlan 10 and and differs from one provider to another then if it's IPoE or PPPoE for authentication.

Also, there are 2 more FTTH networks in Ireland, that are completely seperate from OpenEIR:

    - http://www.siro.ie .. the list of partners operating on their network is here: https://siro.ie/siro-broadband-partners/ .. At the moment, they only cover Carrigaline in Cork City, but there is a big roll out under way. A lot more profiles to choose from there. Residential: 150/30, 350/70, 600/120 and 1000/200. For business even symmetric up to 1000/1000.

    - http://www.enet.ie - eNet have build FTTH infrastructure in 3 towns and villages: Loughrea, Ardee and Kilkenny but it's business only so far and it differs from place to place, what provider offers products on them.

There are some other smaller FTTH rollouts about, but they wouldn't matter to you either way.

A place to check coverage for OpenEIR and SIRO coverage in one go is: https://www.airwire.ie/avail
