Natural sedation

Our dog is a 3 yr old pug x, absolute dote, very friendly, loves her belly rubs. Not too keen on being lifted up and when it comes time to bring her for her nail trim, she gets very distressed. It takes my husband to hold her and me to constantly reassure her so that it can be done. But she really stresses out over it. I'd nearly prefer to do it ourselves so at least she's in her own environment. I'm wondering if there is any type of natural sedation that she could be given that would make her relax a bit. I don't want to knock her out but just calm her down so we can clip the nails.
Most of her walks are on grass so her nails don't benefit from natural wearing down if she was walking on harder surfaces.
Any ideas, or is there even such a thing?

Why not try to train with the scratchboard method? Less stress for all involved.

Pugs (and their crosses, I presume) are notorious for hating their nails clipped!
