    Hi guys,
My son wants a gaming laptop for Christmas, and is generously stumping up €600 towards it.
We will also use it for photos and general stuff like excel.
Say I had a budget of €1200 is that realistic?
    Any suggestions?

Does he play the latest games? Is screen size or weight a concern?

He doesn't have any laptop at the moment as the last one died.
Weight not an issue as it's never leaving the house.
I think 15 inch or so screen.
He has an Xbox one ,so I'm assuming games roughly equivalent to the latest console games graphically.

Poster above was enquiring as to his playing habits as that will dictate what kind of graphics card will be required. Does he want to play the latest games or is he mostly into things like Minecraft or Football Manager etc.

EDIT: Just saw the bit about xBox

If it is never leaving the house would you not think about getting a desktop? You will get a much better computer for less money if you get a desktop.

For his 600 you could build a very good machine with a Ryzen 2600, a gtx 1060, 16bg ram and a good size sdd. You could use your own money to buy him a good monitor, desk, chair, keyboard, mouse, headset etc.

You'll have a lot more bang for you buck, a system that will meet both of your needs easily, parts that are sellable in future, and a much more platform for his next 2 or 3 upgrades.

I should have said(!) that there is literally no room for a desktop in his bedroom,as it's the box room.
I realise that you get more bang for your buck out of desktops, but the practicalities mean it has to be a lappy.

If he wants to game on it he's going to need a mouse and external keyboard anyway. If you can fit those you can fit a monitor and mini-atx tower.

If you can't fit that sort of setup you'd be as well off spending closer to the 600 on the laptop and just getting something more universal that will play games at decent FPS like an Acer nitro or similar.

something like this seems good value for 800 sterling

    high refresh rate screen (120hz)

Nvidia 1060 3gb (which is at or above xbox x - the latest one that is more powerful)

    256 ssd

    looks a good deal.

only pity is that the screen doesn't have nvidia gsync which really makes use of the high-refresh screen but that seems to be still only on high-priced machines.

but yes that's worth the extra 100£ over the other one.
