Video and Voice Recording of Garda?

I'm thinking of becoming a journalist so I tagged along with the Take Back The City Dublin in their occupation of an Airbnb warehouse office in the Grand Canal Dock today (13.10.18).

Two other photographic journalists showed up, one was student press at his university and the other a member of the Free Press, looked like a student as well. Had a Cannon camera each.

After a while of questioning I decided to leave. Going around the building I ran into an employee of the Airbnb, Traffic Garda and Free Press journalists. I quickly began to type down what they were saying while the other journalist voice recorded it, I got most of it but missed some. The Traffic Garda left telling the employee to call Garda in an hour if they were still there or becoming violent.

I didn't think to record the conversation at all. So can I record Garda and/or their voices to aid me in transcribing it later?
The Free Press journalist recorded it and was fine, so can I suddenly just start recording the conversion?
Would i be breaking any law/s?
