Hi , I have €18k to spend on a second hand car . Driving 2010 Astra diesel at the moment. Mostly do short runs to work , was going to buy a golf as I like the style but very basic , changed my mind after taking 2017 Astra elite for test drive , I liked the high spec of the Astra . I am not a car buff so unsure what to buy , this car will do me for next five years. Any recommendations welcome!

18k will buy you a high spec Golf too. The Highline is a very well spec'd car (I drive a 16 Highline).

Was it a petrol you test drove? I assume you will want a petrol if doing a lot of short runs, or do you want diesel?

Stay with Golf, resale value will be better

Outside the box ide, You could look at eGolf if all short runs. They come with a very high spec and automatic.

Dont go diesel if doing short runs, petrol is your best option or electric as mentioned.....

With VW ID coming out next year VW are rolling out private charge network, Ionity, so you wouldn't have to rely on public one....

I test drove an Astra SRi the day I also tested the Golf Highline.

Both were nice cars, and nice interiors, but I much preferred the Golf. The cabin in a Highline is a nice place to be. It'll be hard to ever downgrade from it and all its features if I ever had to.

All 2016, 2015 are well within budget

Bill Griffen has a hybrid Golf, mileage a little high and you might get for 18,500 but will save on fuel

I'll sell you a diesel 2016 Highline Golf.

I'm sure we could come to an arrangement !!

I'd avoid the Astra like the plague. Had a fairly new one 7 or 8 years ago and it broke my heart with repair costs. Bought a Golf Highline a couple of years ago new and I couldn't say a bad word about it, really good car with a great spec.
