liver Disease

Long story short,. I've suffered from serious social anxiety and depression for years and have been a heavy drinker for the same. I've just been back from the doctor who gave me my blood test results. My liver isn't functioning properly and my platelets are low.

I've been asked to go in again on Monday and she is going to do more tests and then send me to a liver specialist.

After googling what this means... I know... Never Google..... It looks like it could be really serious. The combination of the two is never good.

Has anyone been in the same situation and what's can I do?

Haven't touched a drink in 5 days and she has given me Prozac and librium to ease the anxiety but I'm at my wit's end.

No expert but isn't the liver one of the most forgiving organs? It has a great ability to heal itself despite harsh treatment.

I've heard that myself but I have given it quite a bashing over the last 15 or so years.

I'm just so scared that it's not reversible. Not looking for medical advice though, just wondering if anyone else has been through it

Try to be calm and not let your mind get carried away, things are rarely ever as bad as we think they will be.

Through a combination of blood tests and scans, your doctors will be able to grade your liver disease. At least then you will know where you stand. The liver has a reserve capacity but this reserve can become exhausted. For the moment you have made the best decision by giving up the alcohol.

    Best of luck.

Many years ago I used to drink far too much for my own good. I got similar news from my doctor, not sure the exact details but my liver was showing signs of severe abuse. The fright I got helped me to give up drink ,(not an easy task at the time)but the doctor also told me to follow a good diet which I also done.. Anyway long story short 25 years later my liver tests are all good so as some of the previous posters said your liver is forgiving, hope everything works out well for you!

Hi OP, hope you arent stressing yourself out too much over that, that wont do any good , just try keep calm before you get results. As others said livers can manage some level of self repair if you help it along and try cut back on drinking from now on. Any news from doctor yet?

Going in for a fresh blood test today. Been eating healthy and zero booze for over a week. If there's been no improvement then I'm in trouble. Haven't heard from the specialist yet. Hoping that I can get an appointment in the next week or so. I'm getting married this day two weeks. Don't want this hanging over me
