Hi im an unemployed teacher but have been given a week subbing in a local school. I don't know when ill get paid, the wages can take weeks to go through. What will I tell social welfare? If I tell them now that im working next week my wages will be stopped and then means tested by social welfare and my money will be cut. If I dont tell them until I get my wages my payments will be stopped as it will look as though I lied to them. I depend on the social welfare when not working so not sure what I can do in this situation? Any advice?

    Thanks.

Just go and speak to them about it tomorrow. If you don’t then when it flags up that you worked and didn’t sign off, your payment will be suspended possibly for a number of weeks while your claim is investigated. At least this way you will only be without a payment for one week.

There used to be a system for Xs and Os dockets for days you worked and days you didn't. Not sure if that system is still in place.

That's for people on Jobseeker's Casual and is designed for people getting a few hours work here and there from the same employer.

OP, go in tomorrow and tell them you'll be doing a week's work. They'll stop your payment for that week, doesn't necessarily matter to them when you actually get paid by the school.

If there's a chance of more work from the school, ask to go on casual. The system isn't really designed for doing ad hoc weeks here and there, particularly for different employers, as I found out last year when I was given out to for taking on work whenever I could *rolly eyes*

I was told that they suspend your social welfare payments until they receive all the forms from the employer and a payslip, then they means test your wages and cut your dole? I wont get a pay slip as im paid by the teaching council and it can take weeks to go through.

They make it so hard to work.

I work part time, only about 20 weeks a year, the usual thing is that the claim is suspended and if the job goes past 12 weeks it is cancelled. They should suspend it for just a week. The problem is that they take ages to restart the claim sometimes. I'm still suspended after working for a week between August 26th and Sept 2nd.

You should be able to apply for Supplementary Welfare Allowance to cover you for the week and pay it back when you get paid.

How are you surviving? Have you called the social welfare? id be making a complaint. They only have to lift the suspension, it shouldnt take that long.

ive been told before that any money i earn will be means tested so the following number of weeks social welfare payment will be reduced?

It seems the problem was the form sent by revenue. It more or less accuses you of working or receiving a pension, I would have thought that was a positive. I signed off, and received one of these. Then you need a letter stating that you have been let go by whoever you were with. When I got the letter it was filled in incorrectly, and that held up the payment

I think you will be paid in full except for the days you work, a full work week for the social welfare is 4 days or more.

When did Revenue get involved in your SW claim?

If you work anymore then 3 days in any 7 day period then you won’t get any Jobseekers for that week.

The form came from them, I signed off, but they sent it, not the social welfare. PPS number is tied in with the tax office. It is a red form that has to be stamped by the employer and handed into the labour office

Say nothing until you get paid. Claim ignorance if they moan at you (but they likely won't, if you're upfront and say you waited until you got paid as you'd have nothing to live on otherwise).

Social welfare officers are generally decent enough and, like everyone else in the country, they cant wait til they get to go home each day and forget about work. They generally won't give you an unnecessary hard time unless you go in with an attitude or otherwise act the bollocks.

Thanks for the replies, I havnt been able to tell them yet, ill be working 9 - 4 Monday to Friday and the current claims hatch closes at 4.
The school hasnt mentioned anything about me getting paid, they didnt ask for my teaching number so I dont think theyve contacted the teaching council about me subbing. Im afraid to ask about it as although ill get a good wage from it whenever the money goes through im afraid of informing social welfare so im nearly considering working the week for free or else contacting teaching council if or when I ever do get a longer term contract and need to sign off but im not sure if thats something I can do?

I dont want to lie, I want to be honest with S/W but they make it so difficult, the staff in my local sw are a bunch of cows, they dont listen and look for any chance to 'catch you out'. Ive turned down temporary work in the past because of them, they question you like youre a criminal when youre honest with them. I hate confrontation and being made to feel like im doing something wrong so id just rather not deal with them at all.
