Disability allowance query

    Hey all,

I applied for disability back in August, and I got a letter today asking for a p45. I sent it in and I'm just wondering, how long will it take for payments to begin once they receive the p45 and when would I get the arrears cheque?

its can takeseveral months to years to get approved for disability allowance. them asking for a p45 isnt confirmation thatyou have been approved and id be shell shocked if you were aproved in under 2 months. The currant basic wait time is about 16 weeks and thats jsut to have your case looked at by a deciding officer.

If they do approve you itll take 2-3 weeks for payments to begin and up to 12 weeks for any arrears to be paid

Depending on the situation you could well be waiting 12 months + to get approval and payment

I don't see why they'd bother asking for the p45 though if they weren't going to approve me, and it seems very erratic to me as some people seem to get their arrears inside 2 days all the way up to 6 months

Disability Allowance is very hard to get, asking for a P45 is just part of their process no doubt, having it does not guarantee you will get it, they probably just want to see how long you were in the job and what you earned from it. Look through the state benefits forum and you'll see cases of people getting rejected multiple times for it.

Did you actually get a letter saying you’ve been awarded DA? If not then I wouldn’t take anything from them asking for your P45. Please don’t rely on your getting it any time soon.

So basically no decision has been made yet ,

There just requesting your P45 ,I'd be prepared to be refused unless you have all your documentation and medical evidence and paper work in order

I only recently was diagnosed, about a week before I sent the form so I sent the report I was given by my doctor and I've all the I information given so hopefully I'll be accepted

disabilty acceptance depends heavily on what is your health issue and if it prevents you from doing any work at all, if they come to the conclusion there is some types of work you can do they will refuse it.

Asking for a p45 is just one of the ducuments they require as its a means tested payment, it means nothing other than your file has gone thru a prelim document check.

As i said the basic wait time atm to even have your case assessed is about 16 weeks

I am on disabilty and applied for invalidity the 9th of july, i was declared medically good to get it on august 24th, they requested more financial info that day and i posted back first week in september, and my case has only gone to a deciding officer as of monday. If im really lucky ill have a decisin in the next two weeks. But as i said im already on disabilty, and ive been signed off work for life due to cancer side effects

That's not actually true ,it's not your ability to do some work that causes a refusal ,
It's pretty much down to medical evidence and how the illness and or injuries will effect you now and in the future

I applied 3 times before I was awarded DA. It took 2 doctors 2 specialists a consultant and 2 social welfare inspections and 3 years. Just hang on in there!

This is why i said it's not a simple case of applying and getting it straight away

I really can't get what takes so long for someone to be accepted, it's a bit ridiculous that it has to go through so many people and claims before it gets approved.

It’s a long term payment with extra benefits attached. If you are saying that you are not going to be fit for work long term then you need a lot of evidence to prove that.
If it were just a question of your GP declaring that in hisher opinion you were unfit then anyone who just didn’t want to go to work would get it.
You’d be amazed what minor conditions and injuries people think will qualify them for disability allowance.
The medical officer has to ok most of the awards and the medical officer is in Dublin and only has his medical officer hat on a few days a month.
Then there’s a means test that has to be thoroughly processed. If you actually have enough income and savings to live on then you don’t need DA.
Hundreds of applications flood in every week. They all have to be looked at.

But 12 months is a bit ridiculous...

It’s ludicrous. But it’s not the frontline staff that are to blame.

I know of course it's nothing got to do with themselves, it's the people who send in applications because theyre after coming down with a cold, completely throwing a spanner in the works for people like myself who I wouldn't say deserve to get it, but more likely to be eligible.

I had given up applying for DA after 2 failed attempts. Then Turas Nua came hunting for me so I put in another application just to get them off my back and lo and behold that third application was accepted. If you have a good case then your persistence will be rewarded. Good Luck.

[UPDATE] I received a letter in the post this morning, I've been accepted for disability allowance, absolutely delighted so it seems they're changing the turnaround times.
