Arthritis in dog

Hi my dog broke his leg years ago that didn’t seem to heal correctly and he’s crippled the past few days. It’s an old injury that may require amputation but I am worried about putting him through surgery. It doesn’t seem to bother him except in colder weather. His back legs seem quite stiff too.
I’ve been reading about cbd oil for dogs and turmeric as well as joint supplements. I find sometimes with vets they just push the brand they sell which doesn’t mean the best. He’s quite bad at the minute so I’ll pick up a script for his anti inflammatory tablets I’m just worried about him on long term medication and his little kidneys and liver.

What can I do to help him? He’s 8

Hi, don’t know much about it tbh but our little chap (terrier) has been using Rymadil tablets for about the last 6 years. He’s an old boy now at 13/14 but a happy lad with no other health issues apart from his arthritis. If he didn’t take them he wouldn’t be able to move but with them he can go for his walk (that he insists on).

One of the most effective joint supplement currently on the market is YuMove. However, it might be worth at least xraying to make sure it's definitely arthritis. Is there an animal physio near you? They could help put together an exercise plan to optimise medication and/or supplements. They likely won't do this until you've seen the vet though.

Our 12 year old lab had been on rymadil palatable tablets, 100mg, daily for few years. She had a bad accident about 6 years ago.
She had been getting bit worse since late Spring time. I was at the Vets early Summer, getting routine booster jabs, and asked
for a supply of the Rymadil tabs. Seemingly cant get the 100mg palatable ones any more. So I got a box of carprieve instead.
They said it had the exact same drug in it. Everybody noticed, that in about a week, she was a different dog. Way happier in herself,
back playing with the other dog, tugging at toys, in great form. There was no other change to her routine, other than the change in
drugs, so it definately was the tablet that made the change. The carprieve is also nearly half the price. Rymadil tablets are
    a Euro a pop...so a box of 100 is EUR100. A box of 100 carprieve is EUR60.

I have a collieX who has never had any health problems until the last 6-12 months when arthritis started to kick in - he is 14. Vet put him on tablets (could have been Rymadil but not sure) to help with the pain.
This appeared to be working well and went for bloods etc after a month and showed no signs of affecting liver/kidney etc.

A month later he got very sick. lethargic, dehydrated, wouldnt eat so ended up being in the vets for a number of days. wasnt sure if it was due to the heat this summer or not but he always had fresh water and drank well when he wasnt eating. After a few days he was almost back to his usual self.
Fast forward a couple of months when he was in kennels. got a bout of diarrhoea and was off his food. no dehydration this time thankfully. was well looked after.

I have taken him off his medication and now feed him chicken and rice WITH a couple of drops of CBD Oil. the improvement is unreal. no problem walking and jumping with the younger dog now.

I would recommend CBD Oil over medication but each to their own. what works for 1 might not work for another.

    Hi OP,

Sorry to hear about your dog and possible arthritis!

Here's my experience... my nearly 14 year old Cocker has hip dysplasia and arthritis... so far I've been able to treat him 100% holistically and keep him pain free - I've done tons of research on Metacam, Loxicom Rymidal etc and will not be giving it to him unless its my only option. That's just my opinion each to their own.

so here what I do treatment plan wise for my guy - I would just to say IMO no "one thing / one tablet" will make a massive difference... its a combination of stuff that will have a dramatic effect - my guy is running around like a new born lamb!

    Supplements Twice daily:
Yumove advance 360 (you need to get this via your vet and is claimable on pet insurance)
    Good Quality Fish Oils
    Tumeric Paste

    Once daily
    Bone Broth
    Kiefer

    When needed:
    CBD Oil

Feed RAW - keep your dog nice and lean - additional weight is a HUGE factor for dogs with Arthritis - raw chicken feet are really good

a proper orthopaedic dog bed (no blankets / plastic bed etc)

make sure where you dog sleeps is draft free and warm

restrict stairs and jumping in and out of the car

Hydro therapy weekly - hydro is excellent for dogs with Arthritis

magnetic collars - great for helping with pain management

regular exercise, on lead no racing / jumping - key to keeping your dog moving as long as possible.

it make seem like a lot but done daily its just part of our routine etc and so far its keeping Cody happy

Carprieve would be better than yumove?

They are not the same thing at all so cant be compared:

Carprieve is an anti inflammatory - medication - this can cause liver / kidney damage from long term use.

Yumove is a joint supplement - holistic

Thank you guys there’s a lot to take in there but hopefully little man will be jumping across me soon, thanks for all the advice. Vet prescribed the capreive for five days today, and I’ll implement with the supplements and diet change too

Good luck - let us know how you get on. You'll hopefully find what regime suits him. Is it definitely arthritis? we have our dog on various meds - have reduced the anti-inflam meds to every other day now (thinking of long term effects) and hes doing pretty well. Getting weight down would definitely be worthwhile if your dog is overweight - what breed is he by the way?!?

We keep our girl nice and lean....not easy as shes a lab....For a 12.5 year old..and considering the accident she had...shes in great shape.

Only the best care for our fur babies......

Anyone who is giving their dogs daily meds / pain relief / anti inflammatory I’d suggest adding milk thistle to their daily diet - helps support and cleanse their livers x

    I use the Solgar one:

    https://www.evergreen.ie/catalogsearch/result/?q=milk+thistle

Milk thistle is not designed to be taken for months on end so I do I is give it to him for 3 weeks on and 3 weeks off... then back on again etc if that's makes sense?

But Sona do a good one to you can get in Boots - it will help X

Afaik I know you need to take a break with the milk thistle every few months..

OP there's a great webpage called https://www.caninearthritis.co.uk - they have a few FB groups too. There's plenty advice there about management, how to assess if the dog is in pain, if what you're giving is working etc etc

There's a lot of scaremongering around NSAIDs but I personally know owners who have had their dogs on them for years and years without issues - they get regular bloods to make sure everything is ok. Bailey has life long issues so has been on them at various times over the last 9 years without any issues - his bloods are fine

I'd hate somebody to believe the hype and knowingly without pain relief from their pet without speaking to a vet who specialises in pain management first or assessing how their dog does on them. It may sound harsh but sometimes you need to take a step back and thing in terms of quality vs quantity.

Bailey gets fish oil, dasuquin and weekly laser sessions atm he's also kept lean.. that said if he's in pain he'll get pain relief.

Baby boys gone into vets today for full examination blood and X-ray
Well have a better idea what to do I suppose when you know what you’re dealing with. I’m traumatized. He was horrified as I was walking out without him.

Don't worry OP your doing the best you can by him and once you know what your looking at this will help you devise a full treatment for him - best of luck

Re cbd oil we are giving our dog this. He suffers bad arthritic and another condition. We were told last January he was on his last legs. I have been giving him cbd oil and it genuinely seems to be working. He has gone from from 4 steroids a day to 1. And 3 painkillers to 1. I think it is a great all round remedy.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 294 ✭✭Vegetarian2017

Another great remedy as dogs who are old on meds is mint leaves in their water bowl and one spoon of natural yoghurt after their dinner. Genuinely our dog has gone from we thought we were going to lose him to grand still has bad day here and there but genuinely proved the vet wrong. He is also past his age for his breed expectancy !
