    Hi,

Recently due to financial reasons we've had to move back in with the SO's parents. We have a 2 month old baby and she's still receiving maternity benefit but will only do so for another month. I work full time but earn less than €2k a month net until I finish my training fully. We have agreed to pay €1,160 a month rent which leaves me with very little to save up when you take into consideration commuting €260 p/m, insurance €100 and never mind the basics like food and looking after a baby.

Considering both her parents work and because we're renting from them I don't think we would be entitled to claim for anything.

Would anyone have any advice based on my situation above?

Citizens information or your community welfare officer would be your best bet for advice

Maternity benefit is paid for 26 weeks . Unless your partner took leave before the birth she should have five and half months maternity benefit after the birth
Also what are you actually getting for your €1,160 rent ? Bills ? Food ? It seems very steep to me for sharing a house with parents ? After all you moved there to save money ?

( do you mind me asking what SO stands for ? )

Is she not going back to work? I find it very strange that your baby’s maternal grandparents are charging you that amount of rent. If she’s not going back to work you can get €20 WFP per week.

Can't help you with the benefits part but holy tuck her parents sound like some pair of hungry hoors. €1200 a month. Who needs family like that?

Is it a coincidence that the €1,160 X 12 is just under the rent a room threshold of €14k so the parents are pocketing €14k tax free rent from their low paid family members who have a small baby and are trying to save. I’d expect you’d need proof of rental payments for any claim.

They’d only need proof of rent if they apply for rent supplement/HAP which they are not going to get when renting from such close family.
SW payments are not means tested against outgoings, only income.
