    Hi Folks,
Following a fill of oil the burner won't run properly. It will occasionally run for a second or 2 and then cut out or won't fire at all. When it does run its very smokey.... So far I have done/checked the following..
    1. Bled it for air, good flow of oil from bleed screw. Don't think its the problem
    2. Solenoid is working.
    3. Not a photocell issue, swapped a known good 1 in and issue still remains.
    4. Took off cover on pump and cleaned the filter.
    5. Put a new nozzle on it.
Not sure what the problem is?
    Any help ideas??

Can you describe what it is doing, or take a video of the firing sequence?

Does it have status LEDs or is it an older model?

It will run the fan and you can hear like a clicking noise and then it will either lockout straight away or run for a couple of seconds and lockout. If it does run there's a lot of smoke.
    It doesn't have any leds..

Are you happy/sure that you didn't touch the oil pump pressure adjusting screw?, I presume that you have cleaned the oil filter at the tank outlet as well as the one in the pump.
The normal ignition sequence is fan on for 12s purge, the oil solenoid (which is the clicking sound I would think) and spark are then initiated, the flame is then allowed a further 5s to establish/stabilize, if not, Lockout.

Sounds like fuel starvation,When you checked the filter was it very clean or was it dirty or contaminated?,What age is the burner?

Circulation pump is a different problem altogether

"Are you happy/sure that you didn't touch the oil pump pressure adjusting screw?"

    Yes, definitely didn't adjust pressure screw;

Filter was very dirty, not sure of burner age 3-4 years maybe..
I think it was be lack of fuel as well, is there a simple way of checking the pump is actually pumping?

I know I'm repeating myself but have you checked the filter at the tank (assuming one if fitted).
The only safe way of checking the pump is by using a suitable pressure gauge.

fuel starvation is always the first thing to rule out after an oil fill

especially if the tank wasn't allowed to settle for a few hours

Nearly always an air lock. Take off cover. Loosen bleed screw and have a cup underneath to catch it. Tighten back up, clean away any oil.

    Fire it back up.

If its still not firing or only for a second before locking out with red light check the thermostat above the Riello is not set too high.

If that doesn't work take out the photosensor and clean it.

I will check the filter on the line to the burner tomorrow, I would have thought getting strong flow from bleed screw would have meant it was ok but will check it anyway.
Not sure how the stat being too high would cause the boiler to lockout on start-up?
Have replaced the photo sensor already, its not the problem.
    Thanks, for all the suggestions..
