Giving the general Mood of optimism surrounding farming at the moment. I cant but help notice the price of some cattle are back thus suiting those of us who like to finish a few cattle.

So if you were to buy a few cattle for finishing, lets say next July(prior to the annual factory price slump in August) what would you be on the look out for. Weights breeds etc.

I tend to go White Head Angus but am open to suggestion.

At the moment store whiteheads and Angus are the best value for money. 400-450kg animals can be bought for ~€650-750. If they can hit the grass next spring at about 500kg then you will easily have them ready for killing by june july

They must have gone up in price, up to 2 weeks ago you couldn't give em away in some places.
Still at 2 euro a kg is still value considering they would be finished cattle next june/july

Was in loughrea Mart yesterday, any amount of whitehead heifers there around the 450kg mark they could be bought for 650-700 no bother. You would imagine at that money they would have to make money killed next july

Personally I'm not a fan of wintering cattle, I get sucked in every now and again and usually regret it... This side of crimbo anyway.

At 700e I think they are too dear and that
Is a poor return for the seller . Not much of a twist there given a price of 4.20 and dw of 280kgs. The cost of wintering cattle price of meal and fertilizer is just too much never mind the work that goes into it all.

Dead weight of 280kg seems very low. I finished angus's this July at average 350kg - 3.90 a kg, 1,350 euro.

You may have..but it's heifers he is talking about bar they are overage I doubt they do more than 300kgs. If you got 3.90 in July they must have been a. Bullocks b. Out of spec because I killed cattle that month and got more than that.

They should, they wouldn't want to be butty to make sure their 300 dead and id prefer the lower price.

HEX Heifers can end up in all directions though, as ya know. Got a land with the first batch I had.
