Passat cooling system

I have an 08 Passat 1.9tdi. I first noticed the coolant level would drop, I would top up but could never find a leak. Today the warning light came on. The level was below the sensor but when I opened the cap and released the air it all came flooding back to the bowl, so much it started coming out of the overflow pipe, just if anyone has any experience of this, would it be an airlocking issue. also when the temp hand reaches 90 the heater turns to cold air, just as cold as ac. but hand never passes 90. Thanks.

Sounds like head gasket failure to me

Could be the water pump. Not unknown on vw's for the impeller to losen on the shaft and not circulate the coolant properly. Can cause it to boil and lose coolant through the pressue cap so no usual sign of a leak.

Have a mech check the coolant pump is working.

Sounds like the usual 1.9 head gasket failure symptoms as already mentioned.

Thanks all. Turned out it was the head gasket and while it was stripped I got the heads skimmed also. Didn't get the bill yet tho 🙈
