Year or Mileage - which is more important when selling a used car?

    Hi,

I was wondering whether the year of manufacture or the mileage of a used car is more important when it comes to determining a price for selling a car?

My opinion is that the mileage would be far more important since that is what causes the wear and tear on the car.

I have a 2012 car with very low mileage (21k kms) so I'm trying to work out a reasonable price for it. For example if there was another similar car (same year) but much higher mileage (e.g. 80k kms), shouldn't my car be worth a lot more?

    Any thoughts?

    Thanks.

Seems logical, bang the details into the revenue VRt calculator for a value estimate maybe?

A low mileage 2012 would rarely be worth more than a high/average mileage 2013 for example.

To me the actual condition of the car would be more important to me. If a car had higher mileage but better bodywork then that's the one I'd go for

I'd be reluctant to buy a low mileage diesel car as opposed to petrol.

Generally speaking the year is king.

Most people seek to "come up the years" when buying second hand.

Having said that if you have service/NCT records to back up your low mileage you should expect a bit more for it than one with 80k kms.

Like said above if it’s diesel then your low mileage is not a bonus and would personally put me off buying the car at all regardless of condition or price.

If it’s petrol then the low mileage should mean slightly more value but not much, maybe €300-500 above the average price.

Would be my way of thinking as well look at the car not the registration plate dealers make a song and dance about low mileage when they are selling if u r trading in a low mileage car they say well not really worth anymore

Agree with you 100%, especially when Insurance companies are penalising cars on age regardless of the mileage.

Another piece of nonsense from the insurance companies.
If a car is NCT'd ie. roadworthy that should be enough for them.
Time for Government to step in.

Considering the huge tax the government makes on new car sales I don't think they will do much.

Recently went from a 06 to a 07. I had the 06 for nearly 5 years. Just fancied a change.

I got disbelieving looks when I bought a 07. (Even more as I bought a petrol)

"Why don't you get a newer car, sure that is old and will cause you trouble"

Most just look at the plate, they don't consider mileage, service history or most times brand reputation.

What's wrong with a low milage Diesel, I do a lot of miles and always try and find a low miles car when buying as the mileage will be back to normal when I'm finished with it.
If the car is good it's good, low milage shouldn't be a turn off.

Clogged DPF's and EGRs as the cars are only doing short runs and aren't being driven as intended.

How do we know OP's car hasn't just dome 42x 500km stints though? Low mileage does equal short trips or vice versa.
