Hi lads is it possible to re fill used screw in cartridges from a 20 litre can for example, I've a load of used cartridges here an a drum of grease is far cheaper than buying the screw in cartridges . I've searched u tube but nothing showing thanks lab man

Best option would be to buy a greasing unit to suit a 20l litre tub.

Yes, on the small cap drill a hole and put a grease nipple on it. Then when empty screw back on small cap and fill. Works quick if you have a air power grease on top of 20liter can.

A 245 welger baler takes screw in cartridges 7 at a time to fill the chamber does about 2 days baling 30 euro roughly each time

15 euro a day, for a baler which may have the capacity to produce from experience 200-300 bales a day doesn't seem like bad value.

Or, you could try scrimping on grease and see how that works out.

But why spend €15 when with a little ingenuity €5 will do and only a couple of minutes extra lost?
Over a 6 week season on silage, hay, straw that is heading on for €500 saved on grease for a baler alone.

Excuse my ignorance but why can't the chamber be filled direct from the 20l can?

To save that figure you would have to use 9, 12.5kg drums of grease over the course of a season on one baler.

That's 282 cartridges that require filling.
Bulk greasing from the drum is the best option.

How much grease do you put on the wheel bearing of your car? Maybe it's time to start using sealed bearings too on agricultural machinery. Cheaper bearing at manufacture means more spent on grease during the lifetime of the machine.

They were tried on balers....a disaster would be a mild way of putting it. As a local contractor said about them sealed bearings, "sealed for life and life is short"

What make were they? Was it all the shock loading or did the dirt/dust get in there.

Strangely enough all the bearings on the kverneland tedder here are sealed. I went from 36 grease nipples on the fella to 6 on the new kverneland. Only to be given a shot after washing

Theres a 245 profi here at work. The fella thats on her puts in two cartridges a day into her. Shes 3 years old and be about 35k bales on her and no bearings gone on her. They seem very hungry for grease compared to the mchale

McHale baler uses one cartridge for every 300 bales.

What a waste of grease? How much of it actually gets used for it's intended purpose - lubrication. I see a lot of machines have the Lincoln auto greasers.

Couldn't tell you the make, I'd say lack of grease was the biggest problem, one pump of grease daily would keep a lot of dust and dirt out too.

    Acid from wet bales

There system on the Welger is a pot or jar with a type of bar inside of it going round and round all day so grease is going out to the bearings all day same as the oil to the chains on the baler

I had a Welger 12s with sealed bearings. They were a nightmare true enough. I nearly lost it to fire on a few occasions when a roller bearing let go while at hay.

    You couldn't keep them sealed.
