Most comprehensive household policies cover liability to 3rd parties arising from the domestic occupation of the house. In other words, you have public liability as long as there is no business activity going on in the property. Most insurers have policy booklets online and it will be under the heading of Liability to The Public, Liability To Third Parties, or something similar

On a household policy there will also be personal insurance. That is disabled in the case of buy to let. you should get a good insurance broker to negotiate a policy for you.

OK so if my clumsy cousin "slippin Jimmy" hits his head off the garage door, I'm covered?

    Have you read your policy?

Cover normally excludes family members resident in the home. Remember, this is a public liability cover, not a pot of money to cover injuries. Anyone claiming needs to prove that your property, or your occupancy of the property, caused the incident. If 'slippin Jimmy' causes himself harm, that's not your responsibility. (not that this ever stopped a claim being lodged)
