Toyota said today that it was recalling a total of 2.43 million hybrid vehicles around the world over a hybrid system issue which can lead to stalling.

The recall, which includes Prius and Auris models, covers vehicles produced between October 2008 and November 2014.

It affects about 1.25 million vehicles sold in Japan, 830,000 vehicles in North America, and 290,000 vehicles sold in Europe.

Vehicles sold in China, Africa, Oceania and other regions are also affected.

In a statement, Toyota said that in "rare situations", some vehicles could fail to switch to a "failsafe" driving mode in the event of a fault with the hybrid system, which can lead to a loss of power and result in stalling.

The car maker said that it was not aware of any crashes due to the issue in Japan.

Only 1289 here in Ireland.... I would have thought there were more self-charging () cars in Ireland than that?!

Ok, so a software glitch that needs to updated. Recalls happen all the time and get fixed when discovered. No reports of crashes so this is a good thing.

The number of cars affected does seem very low. I would have thought there are way more hybrids with the same power train and software behind it, or maybe the state does slightly from variant to variant.

The fact it spans across two generations of Prius suggests it's not just one powertrain that is affected (Gen 3 Prius has new engine, transmission, etc.).

The only cars that share the Gen 3 Prius powertrain are the Auris Hybrid, Prius+ and Lexus CT200h, which all came out in 2011 (maybe 2012 for some in Ireland). It seems the Lexus has escaped this recall for whatever reason.

The 1,289 for Ireland sounds about right for those 6 years. Maybe there are some used imports that are unaccounted for.

It's possible but as long as the car was serviced with Toyota Ireland then it goes into the list. I got some recalls for my UK auris a few years back.

My concern is more with Japanese imports, I'm not sure how good they are at finding them for recalls.

My Prius Plug-in is a UK import, it's seen the local dealer a few times (mainly to maintain warranty) and they've already done one recall on it. Not sure if this one is applicable yet.

    EDIT: Forgot about this: https://www.toyota.ie/recall-checker.json
    Yes, it's due for something!

The Revenue pass ownership details and VINs to the Irish offices of the car companies. I was told this by someone who handled that info in one of those companies.

And further proof is I've had recalls done on cars I imported from the UK that never saw the inside of a main dealer.
