Reckon I called this one a while ago
But I'd say it'll be little more than a nicer screen, more storage on board and better battery, while retaining full compatibility with the current device.

Dang, posted this in the other Switch thread....
Still, good news, essentially the Switch lite, a hardware refresh rather than a new console.

Inevitable and as was widely predicted. It needs to keep up the pace. No harm really unless future games are reliant on the extra grunt of the "new"Switch to get a port.

Very unlikely this is going to generate a two tier format.
This will be the same as the Ds/DSlite or GBA/GBA:SP variants.
Maybe, at a stretch, there might be some sort of better performance docked/undocked, reducing frame rate drops, but look at the New 3DS, very few dedicated releases, rather performance improvements for existing titles.

I'm sure the new version will make it harder to hack, at least the physical implementation of it. if it's aesthetic changes I won't bother upgrading, I don't need it slightly thinner, and the screen is fine for me. But if it encourages more people to buy a Switch, then good news.

Oh well, give me an easy life and a peaceful death.

The inevitable negative spin is that the promise of an updated device might put people off buying the current version.
But then, this has happened with pretty much every consumer electronic device ever.
Be it VHS, DVD, Television, PS, 360 or Nintendo, there have been hardware updates and refreshes and little sign of damage to the brand as a result.

Plus, despite this news being significant to enthusiasts like ourselves, to the great unwashed out there it's going to make little difference to their purchasing decision this Christmas, which is surely the critical period.

A Mario Party bundle this holiday season is going to sell loads.

And the refreshed Switch will probably ship with a main series Pokemon game next year!

    Probably less hacker friendly too...

Wonder what the price will be and if they use an updated Tegra x2 chip??

I think a new Tegra chip is a guarantee. That's the main hardware flaw of the current version (it leaves the console wide open to hacking)

I think a new more powerful version of the Switch is inevitable if they want to stay current and bring decent ports of current gen titles to the system. The current Switch is already pushed to it's limits with ports by Panic Button.

It is quite an achievement that games like Wolfenstein 2 have been ported over successfully, but I don't see modern pc/ps4 game ports continuing in 2019 and 2020 with the current hardware, there is only so much they can squeeze out of the current system.

A better screen and possibly better battery life would also be a good bonus.

I'd like to see them unveil the co-processor dock they were planning in the patent applications we were looking at back in the tail end of the WiiU days, so that you can have a docked performance on a regular switch that is comparable to this respin, and hopefully then the disparity between undocked original and respin would be mostly absorbed by any increase in resolution on the respin.

A die shrink with boosted clocks would go a long way I think. Making all games 720p undocked and 1080p docked, none of this 540p blurriness. Shrink the bezels a bit around the screen but keep it the same physical size to be compatible with my joycons.
I think a 1080p display would be a waste when traded against battery performance too.

Could they actually make a good dock, that would be nice for them to do. One that doesn't make you worry about scratches at all & is handy to remove the charging cable. Plus doesn't look like it cost about 3 quid to put together.

Even though WSJ have a relatively good rep, that article is about as empty as could be. 'There could be a new Switch between summer and end of year 2019, but we don't know if Nintendo even know what form it will take'

An new, updated Switch is about as long speculated as the actual Switch itself, once it was known it was part handheld form. The whole 'I called it' from some Twitter fakers etc is quite funny to watch. Could be wrong but I don't think we'll hear anything about it officially for quite a while. Companies don't really hint or early announce consoles, like they do games, until there's a lot to show.

The team of budgies that handle Nintendo's console security will have to up their game. There's a second undisclosed exploit of the current Switch already, and a new design Switch will be a prime target for hacking.

The Switch getting hacked was all nvidias fault this time around from what I can tell. Nothing to do with Nintendo's security. It's a vulnerability in the tegra processor itself, affecting all hardware that uses it.

Nintendo's security has been praised this time around.

You don’t think choosing and implementing an off the shelf processor for your new console is a bad idea? The Tegra was widely documented, and that documentation gave hackers a lot of the info they needed to crack the system open. Apparently within said documentation if you search “bypass the smmu”, you’ll get info on how to bypass the system memory management unit. Debugging hardware is also easily obtainable for the X1. None of this should have been a surprise to Nintendo.

I’m sorry, but in context of system security, Nintendo royally goosed up. The GameCube, Wii, DS, 3DS, Wii U, and now the Switch...all hacked wide open. I think it’s fair to say Nintendo are poor in terms of security. Watch the revised Switch join that lineup before long too
