Do I need a PPS card?

Is a PPS card something everyone in the country should have even if they aren't on social welfare?

I don't remember ever having one but it is long gone if I did.

This link - http://www.welfare.ie/en/Pages/Public-Services-Card_holder.aspx - tells me how to get one for the first time and that I'll be contacted when a card expires.

I have never been contacted to renew so does this mean I've never had one?

Or must I have had and can I get a replacement?

In your day to day life you’ll not need one but they are now necessary to have one to renew a drivers license. I’d imagine over time we will need them more and more, my wife neede one for maternity benefit I think and if you lose your job I’d imagine having one would speed up the process.

Renewed driving licence a few months ago without one. Wife gets child benefit payments without one. Don't see any reason for having one.

I think for the driving licence it's needed to renew online only, you still don't need it to renew in person in the driving licence office

The money just shows up in the bank account every month.

Your wife should get a PPS number at once.
Getting child benefit is a proof for raising a child. The new pension system can supply your wife with up to 12 years in pension credits- that is already a little bit more than 25% of the full rate.
The monthly CB is registered on her pension record. And the pension record is registered under the PPS number.
Anybody MUST have a PPS number for that purpose.
Actually anybody working and living in this country needs a PPS number. Revenue, SW and medical card are tied to it.

Sorry, I don't understand a word of that. What are these pension credits and is it worth my while getting them?

I’m sure that she’s already got a PPS number if she’s getting child benefit. It’s the Public Services Card the thread is about.

Your state pension record is registered under your PPS number. No PPS number- no record. No record- no pension.
Are you sure now your wife has no PPS number? She must have a little book for her CB benefit. My wife used to have one of those as well. The PPS number is in that book.

That is what I was thinking as well. My wife would not have gotten any CB without her PPS number.

But your man said she has none....

Are you mixing up a PSC and a PPSN?

He said that she doesn’t have a PS card, not that she doesn’t have a PPS number.

If I already have one but cannot find it, can I apply online or by phone for a replacement?

Or are replacements they only issued at the local welfare office?

    No - I did not.
But the title of this thread is very misleading. There is no such thing as a "PPS card"- it is a PSC card. It shows- among other things- the PPS number of the holder.

I read your answer as a statement about a PPS number- not about a PSC card.

Public services card is not mandatory.
