How to confirm Triple glazing

We just had new windows installed which are supposed to be Triple Glazed. It looks like there are only 2 panes of glass when we do the test where you shine a light on the glass and we have also seen other triple glazed windows. We cannot get in touch with the company - how do we confirm that they are not triple glazed - do we need to get a surveyor to do this ?

Triple glaze are easily identifiable to the naked eye, it should look like to sets of double glazed windows. Take aphoto at the corner junction and post it here or email it to the company. Do your invoices make note of the spec?

Look at the edge of the unit and you should clearly see if there are two spacer bars on the perimeter or not

It's nakedly clear when the windows are triple glazed. Ours are.

Not being able to get in touch with the company would concern me...

You'll see there's two outer panes and the centre one.

Thanks all I can't seem to upload a photo but it looks like there is a black warm edge spacer with a line in the middle which we thought was glass but it is not thick enough. What do we do if a 'mistake' has been made ?

Put your finger on the window and count the reflections

Is there any text on the spacer. You may have to look really closely but there is data printed in the spacer in most of the modern units I've seen.

There are only 2 reflections, and no text on the spacers on any of the windows I can see and the spacer width is the same on the French doors which have a stamp or something on the glass inside so it is obvious there are only 2 panes. Thanks for the advice everyone.

They confirmed they are only double glazed and want to replace the panes with triple glazed. Is this possible in a 70mm frame?

Cant comment on if its possible but want to applaud your detective work: well done on spotting it

The strange thing is our neighbour who also thought they had triple glazing and recommended the company to us have now realized they have double-glazed too.

When I was getting windows priced I was told the same frames were used for double and triple.

It seems likely that you've suffered an outright fraud.

That's correct for a lot of frames now. The more recently the OPs windows were installed the more likely it is to be the case. It's a very simple job to replace only the glazed units.

I'm lead to believe that in this case the price difference between double and triple is quite small. I can't see how a supplier was making much money out of this switch - I'd be worried about what other shortcuts might have been taken!

Do it often enough and it adds up I'd imagine!

What's the cost difference between double and triple out of interest?

We never priced double only triple..most websites say 20%..but there are varying standards of triple...it seems 44cm should be minimum and apparently 28mm triple will not be allowed from next year...even though the co. we had are fitting it knowing that is the case but not letting customers know..am I allowed to name the company here

Nb if your house is north south, you might only want to get the north facing windows in triple glazing, as you get the solar gain with double in the south facing ones

    Not true

As outlined earlier in th thread. Solar transmittance can be managed. It’s negligible in the context of solar gain, and there is less heat loss with triple.

Ws this a Galway company? I was working on a house a few months ago that had the same mistake, they were willing to give back 1800 from the price paid or replace the glass to triple glazed.
