My friend recently changed his car to the one above, and after having a spin in it, I like it enough to consider one as my next purchase. These were not available in Ireland in 2008, so his was imported by the previous owner.

His was a manual, but I'm considering an automatic. the current second-hand value is within my budget (<5k) but because they're rare in this country I'm probably going to have to go up north or to the UK.

Anyone have any advice or tips I should look out for? not necessarily the estate, but the engine and gearbox.

That'd be a BXE engine, they aren't great.

There's better ways to blow 5k that a ten year old UK import BXE engined Golf. Its a nice idea but that's where it's best kept IMO.

    BXE is a 1.9 though?

PD 2.0 TDI risky enough too?

I think in the Golf/Leon/A3/Octavia doesn't have the balancer shaft issue that a Passat/Superb/A4 would have.

Not saying there aren't other problems but no ten year old diesel will be perfect.
