Length of time to 1st Grad job

Just wondering how long did it take to get your first grad position and was it in your field?

I'm on the market here since the end of May, I know it's only a few months but as far as I'm aware I'm the only one from my year yet to pick up a role, which makes me feel about an inch tall tbh. Have a 2.1 in Mechanical/Manufacturing Engineering.

How long is "normal"? Is there a normal?

I had mine arranged in February and I graduated in May. That was in 2014.

Don't worry about not having something yet. It all depends on what you want and where you are applying to.

    Have you had interviews?

Yeah had 5 interviews in total. Nothing from any of them. Attended career coaching after the last one but havent had a positive response from an application since then. Misery tbh.

Did you get any feedback from interviews?

I finished exams in June and it was November before I started a job. I was one of the last in my year to land a job and admit it was very frustrating.

If you're free to move, try Galway. A lot of the medical device factories are looking out for employees, both skilled and non-skilled. If you can't get a graduate role, go in as an operator and secure an engineering job internally - it would give you a better grounding in how the products are made.

Yeah but it was pretty much all nonsense tbh. Each one gave a different reason sometimes even the old "lack experience" nugget. I'm a mature grad with non engineering experience in the same field. Felt like any old ****e just to provide feedback rather than anything honest.

Immediate job offer, but this was back during the dot com bubble.

    Use the time wisely.

For example, do a CompTIA course.
