Geneva Break

Visiting Geneva in October and looking for advice to help plan the trip; have not booked accom yet so open to any suggestions (not too expensive!). Flying in on Friday night to Zurich and staying heading to Geneva on Saturday mid-day either by train or will rent a car. There from Saturday to Monday; anyone visited and have suggestions of sights and attractions to visit there? Would it be worthwhile renting a car to drive from Zurich and to visit the outskirts of Geneva and/or spend a night somewhere up the mountains?

    Any advice much appreciated.

Bring lots of money would be my first suggestion.

Was there two or three years ago and while it's a nice city I wouldn't be overly pushed on it. Maybe just me but I think a day trip would be enough. Walk around the old town and the lake area. You can climb the cathedral Spire for some great views. Drool while looking in windows of the upmarket watch shops.

Can't recommend anywhere to eat or drink as nowhere we went particularly stood out and main impression was "Ouch" when bill arrived. Nightlife seemed nonexistent..we were there for Patrick's Day so fancied a few beers but apart from a tiny packed Irish bar couldn't find much. It was midweek to be fair but I got the impression the locals just crossed the border into Lyon if they wanted a good time at weekend.

Getting from Zurich I'd take the train. Reliable, reasonably priced if booked on time, comfortable and nice to relax and enjoy the views.

To be honest if you don't have to be in Geneva I'd head somewhere else. We flew in there and spent a night or two before heading to Berne, Interlaken, Lucerne and flew home out of Zurich. All beautiful places which we both preferred to Geneva.

Sorry that I haven't exactly sold the place to you but I think the main attraction is the lake and Switzerland as a whole is not exactly short of stunning scenery. Worth visiting for a day but wouldn't be top of the Swiss pile.
