Might be looking at a 1.4 diesel Auris automatic this week. Whats the reliability of these like? Are these suitable for mostly short journeys? Looking for low maintenance cheap auto car. I do about 6k miles a year

Buy a petrol if it's low miles and reliability you want.

The automatic gearboxes are shockingly bad on them.
Hyundai i30/Kia Ceed/Kia Soul/Toyota Prius are very good automatic cars.

    What’s your budget

My daughter has a 1.4 with manual gearbox, but as she only has it 2 months it is early days to conment on reliability.
Having said that, it has required nothing but a standarf service for the annual test.
Just a few things i would comment on...
    1. Her car came from Scotland, and there is quite a bit of rust on the underside. I put it down to the salt used on thge roads, but worth checking on the car you are looking at.
    2. There is some engine vibration from 1800 to 2000 rpm under load. It feels like the dual mass flywheel was replaced with a solid one when the clutch was replaced (based on my experience of doing something similar in a vw years ago). The forums do mention a vibration, so that may not be the cause.
    3. I do remember reading that the auto boxes gave problems ... but check out and post a question on the auris section of the Toyota owners club forum.
    4. Under normal driving the car is giving 51 or 52 mpg.
    5. I really like to drive it... it is a nice engine and powerful / nippy enough for my driving, and is comfortable.
    6. We searched a long time for a realatively low mileage example ... as expected, these cars are bought for doing high mileage.

As others have said, I wouldnt go for a diesel with that low mileage per year.

    The 1.4 D-4D doesn’t have a dual mass flywheel.

Budget is upto 6k but ideally way less. It needs to be auto, reliable and 2008 on

The diesel Auris was never available with an automatic gearbox. And if your doing small mileage consisting of mostly short journeys then why the hell would you be looking at a diesel car?

This hasn't been stressed enough, but if you do low mileage and short trips, it'd be nuts to buy a diesel.
    So, no diesel!
And a small petrol with auto?
The idea horrifies me for some reason.
    Petrol, manual. Simple, sorted.

Really, I thought there was no diesel auto in them back then.

First one is good, has the luxury pack, so has 9 speaker JBL audio system, cruise and front fogs.

Second one is a jap import and tbh if going down that road you’ll get the newer model for that money.

This is probably the one the OP was going looking at.
Even the previous generation Corolla had a 1.4 D-4D auto option. They were dirt too.

Looks nice but the ad concerns me
    Blocked reg
    No name on ad
    Not Greenlight verified
    Seller can’t be messaged
Mileage down as ”100km” (uk car, plus cute hoorism of not listing 100000 but 100)
    Taken in Tesco car park

Yep, looked a bit risky alright and I'd say that mileage is at least 100k miles rather than 100k km.

Ah ok. I seriously wouldn’t bother, it’s a dreadful gearbox in them.
