My friends and I are considering designing a bowl that would display various ratios for milk and cereal. We wondering if a design of that sort would patentable?

It might be something that is more copyrightable than patentable.

Could be, but you need the advice of a patent lawyer.

Your real problem is that establishing a patent is cheap enough, but enforcing it is very expensive. And clever people can frequently design something similar that your patent doesn't cover but functions similarly.

In a nutshell, unless it will make you mega rich, don't bother
