Delighted to have red squirrels in my garden :)

Is there anything that I should do to help them out?

Plenty of Hazel, Beech and Oak for them but wondering about winter.

    Thank you.

In winter you can have a platform or table with hazelnuts, sunflower seeds, beech nuts, and walnuts. Peanuts are not really suitable. You can collect surplus nuts now and store them for winter if you can't buy them locally.

Sorry for hijacking the thread but it seems relevant...

The other day in the Priory in Tallaght I saw three of what looked like red squirrels, except that they had a grey body and red head and tail...

Anybody else seen them....or know what they are? My understanding is that red and grey squirrels can't interbreed....

They don't inter breed but Greys can often look red and Reds look grey. Size, ear tufts etc are important diagnostics.

Can I ask why peanuts aren't suitable compared with say walnuts or sunflowers?

For a start, they are not actually a nut or seed, but are legumes or beans. Squirrels will eat them but they lack much of what they need if not supplemented with other foods.
