Irish citizenship application

Hi, I have decided to apply for Irish citizenship. I've lived here 20 odd years but the Brexit thing has spooked me.

Couple of questions if I may.

I have to send in my passport but my father is quite ill and I may need to fly back to UK at short notice. How long will it be for my passport to be returned?

It won't be possible to get utility bills for each year I have lived in Ireland, would land registry folio suffice?

How long is the whole process?

Do I have to go to the ceremony?

    Thanks

You can fly to the UK as a British (or Irish) citizen from Ireland without a passport on any airline that isn't Ryanair. Aer Lingus, BA, Flybe or easyJet and Jet2 from Belfast. Any photo ID will suffice

The passport is returned rather rapidly from what I've seen in the few naturalisation cases I know

Yes this is correct. You can fly on Aer Lingus with a driver's license.

There is no timeline on the process. It can take as little as six months to be approved but then you have to wait for the next ceremony.

I know a few people who've gone through it, almost all of them have had INIS come back to them looking for additional information/documentation.

And you do have to attend the ceremony.

    Yes unless you are minor

Does anyone know how long the process is taking currently? We applied back in May. I received a letter that I needed to get a public services card, notification of receipt when I sent in the proof of having done that, and nothing since.

Every application is different. Could be six months, could be longer. Was talking to someone today who is waiting 17 months. They aspire to process applications within 6 months but there's so many reasons it can take longer. Delays in security clearance from your home country /countries you've lived in is quite often the reason. I know SA is notoriously slow

The SA bit could explain it, seeing we both lived there for a good while.

In my case it was 3 weeks.

You only need utility bills for last 5 years (out of 8). No need to browse for utility bills from 20 years ago.

In my case it took 1 year from sending application with documents, to attending ceremony.
Do I have to go to the ceremony?
    Yes, it's obligatory.

You can drive to the UK with just a license, and cycle without any ID
