It’s an opel....so check for reviews of the opel version to get better idea

    Will do thanks

Check last few pages of bangernomics few people talking about how easy to get parts. Would of thought the car itself is on the pricey side though.

    Usual trope

    It shares GM parts

    Big money for an 08.

Definitely more reliable diesel out there if that's what you need.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,559 ✭✭✭✭lawred2

Expensive alright. Wouldn't be paying much more than 2-3k for it myself.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,936 ✭✭✭ewj1978

    Way too much money.
Seen one advertised on a saab forum for €1650.

Have a 2 litre petrol turbo Saab 93 myself and it's a great car and often overlooked I think. Just crossed 250,000 kms this week and never a days trouble!

You can get great value with Saab's so that one seems over priced to me. Shop around and you should get one cheaper or make a low ball offer.

When buying a second hand car if your not embarrassed by your opening offer it's too high ;)

It is the top spec Aero model which is nice as it includes heated seats etc.

Just saw someone mention in an earlier thread to stay away from the 1.9 diesels. Oops

I would be more worried about the 2.0 diesel in vectra, insignia

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,750 ✭✭✭Avatar MIA

Just echoing what's been said. While the top of the range Saab, it looks overpriced.

    I had a petrol 2.0t 9-3 and it was a great car.

Not familiar with the diesel or bi turbo, could be fun. Would offer 2.5 max.

Feck it, going to hold out for a petrol. Don't need a diesel anyway. Just learning at this stage.

If you don't need diesel stay well away.

They will break your heart and rob you blind, unless of course you do big miles.

Complete nonsense and has been shown to be the case many many times on this forum.

    OP - I currently own an 08 Aero 93 1.9ttid. I couldn’t recommend it highly enough.

I’ve had 2 535d’s and wouldn’t compare but for the money you’ll pick one of these up for they are a savage car and equally there’s no comparison when it comes to maintenance and parts.

That said, it is essentially an opel for Swedes so this guy is looking for way too much.

But I love this car and will be keeping it for a long long time..

What's your point please elaborate on where and how you say what you say goes.

Ok you keep telling yourself that ....

Diesel cars aren't designed for doing short runs etc.

It’s like a mantra in here this place that a diesel will break down the second you drive off the forecourt.

If you’re doing any kind of runs at all a diesel will be fine.

It’s been debated to death and discussed many times over and not one poster yet has been able to prove that a diesel will cost more to run then a petrol.

The only argument I’d consider anyway viable was that the tyres wear quicker on a diesel because it’s heavier so I’ll give you that one..

If you believed this forum the roads would be littered with broken down diesels.
It’s just a mantra that people pass on without any knowledge or experience whatsoever half the time. They just read some other guy say it. And it’s just not true..

    https://www.theguardian.com/money/2018/jan/27/diesel-cars-cheap-reliable-petrol

MotorEasy found the average engine repair bill for a diesel was £517, compared with £433 for a petrol model
Duncan McClure Fisher, founder of MotorEasy, says: “Diesels experience many more small problems than petrol cars. If you’re still considering a used diesel car, our advice is to avoid high-mileage examples, particularly if you are only driving low mileage or doing city driving.”

It's a tad anecdotal but it's quite clearly an well established industry narrative that diesel engines are simply more suited to extra urban driving opposed to city.
Can you find proof to the contrary that diesel cars are equally well suited to city driving as their petrol counterparts?

I'm not disputing any of that..

    But back OT.

The 1.9 ttid is a savage engine.

Great power for a 1.9 and Parts are cheap and plentiful when needed..

But the car being advertised is way too expensive..

A 08 Saab is well into bangornomics territory..

For the most part of my Life, I have been driving mainly diesels, and always found them to be more economical in general. Up to the advent of the DPF, that is. Now unless I was doing minimum 20'000 plus per annum, I would go for petrol, as things stand ( rumour has it that DPF technology is to be introduced to all petrol engines as well ) So we will see where that takes us. But the diesel is unfairly demonised. They have yet to make a car that is 100% trouble free, and I include the EV's in that as well. Lack of proper servicing is the main cause of motor problems.

    .

The article states that diesels are 3x more likely to break down and are on average more costly to repair than petrol in the event that they do break down.

OP stated he doesn't need a diesel, another poster noted that diesel should be avoided in the event that the OP doesn't do the requisite driving to warrant diesel. You then suggested that is untrue.

As highlighted above, you stated that the narrative on the forum that diesel costs more to run isn't supported in evidence.

It seems to be the case that diesel is more costly to repair, is more likely to need repair if it's driven in a city style manner of driving.

Like other posters, I'm rather confused as to your point.

The OP posted an ad to a Diesel twin Turbo Saab 93 and asked whether it was reliable or not.

Then of course the usual nonsense gets posted about the cost of running a diesel how they’re likely to break down with large billls Yada yada.

Op is convinced and is now looking for a petrol. Good on them. I wish them many years of safe and happy driving and standing on forecourts..

Meanwhile I was simply responding to the ad and saying yes I have exactly the same car and I find it as reliable as any other car I’ve ever driven but as many others have said, it’s over priced.

It is one hell of a car though OP so if you could get one at the right price I wouldn’t over look it..

Either way, good luck whatever you get

Thanks rennaws, i actually wouldnt mind a diesel but just thought a petrol would suit better as wouldnt really be doing the mileage. I enquired about the car i posted originally and service history is only from 100k onwards which kinda put me off. Im still open to either petrol or diesel at this stage, provided i can find something with service history Just want to play it safe and dont mind holding out for the right one.

You do right. Your car will come along.

I went with diesel about 15 years ago because I wanted the power without the fuel costs. I was driving a 523i and couldn’t enjoy it. Every time i touched the pedal I could see the needle drop. So I bought a 535d and wasn’t disappointed.

I’ve been driving diesels since for pretty much the same reason. That and I’m now a torque junkie..

The 1.9ttid is quick and cheap to run and maintain while the aero is a nice place to be with all those extras so it ticks a lot of boxes for me. Just way over priced.

The BMW’s I found were a little too pricey to maintain and I found myself having to buy parts directly from BMW a little too often. Superb cars though when they ran right..

Correct me if wrong but you service and repair your own cars so don’t count that as a cost? That is great for you but this is not a luxury most people have......

Well, as highlighted previously, the only nonsense that has been somewhat proved to exist is your assertion that diesel cars are not as costly to run as petrol. The only evidence that has been been provided thus far has refuted your claim, ergo making your claim the only nonsense thus far.

You may disagree from your personal experience but that is completely anecdotal so it's probably worthwhile having some decent sources before you determine that other's sources are nonsense.

I and many many others have disagreed with the boards groupthink on Diesels multiple times over multiple threads and the only proof that posters so far have been able to come up with to demonstrate higher maintenance costs is that they might go through tyres quicker because they’re heavier..

DPF issues happen. No one says they don’t. Just not anything like to to the degree that posting on boards would have you believe, even when only doing short runs..

It’s as if some guy heard it mentioned on a bar stool many moons ago and still trots it out any chance he gets in order to appear knowledgeable on the subject.

Multiply that by about 30 bar stools and you have a standard thread on boards with lots of people trying to appear knowledgeable and warning of the dangers of buying diesel but as we also established in previous threads, almost none of them have ever actually owned or driven a diesel.

It’s nonsense and I call it out as such eveytime I see it. If diesels were as unreliable as people in here would have you believe, no one would ever buy one.

The OP asked about the car in the original advert. As I happen to own the very same car I thought I’d him know that despite all the nay sayers on this and every other thread telling him the sky will fall in if he buys a diesel, it won’t and he’ll have a savage car if he could get it at the right price.

Maybe you also own the same car and can advise OP on that basis.. I’m guessing you don’t..

The car that I drive is completely irrelevant to my argument as it constitutes nothing but my own personal experience of a certain fuel type.
I don't believe that is quite a good enough litmus test to determine the true differences in reliability & cost between petrol and diesel. I find the use of actual evidence is a more valuable source.

Furthermore, your conclusion that diesel cars are heavier than petrol ergo the difference in average repair cost must be the cost of the extra tyres is a reach at best and simply ridiculous at worst.
I have no figures to the contrary but it seems difficult to arrive at that point having been pointed to evidence that suggests diesel cars are 3x more likely to break down than petrol but it's the cost of tyres that distinguishes the price gap.

Perhaps you can point me to some evidence to reinforce your points?

Nice looking car, pity about the mileage, at least it's likely to be genuine. A lot of older car mileage reporting seems dodge.
