Hi guys strange one today. Went to look at a car for sale. The seller brings in cars from the UK. The car had full main dealer service history however the service book didnt specify if miles or kilometres. The Mot cert matches whats on the clock more or less except the only mot cert available is specified in miles. He said hes come across this before and its a non issue. I have my doubts though as the mot cert puts a lot more mileage on the car. I hope im making sense. Has anybody come across this before?

The MOT will be correct and the NCT incorrect.

They only deal in miles in the uk.

If the MOT says 50,000 miles, the service history says 50,000, and the seller is saying there’s 50,000km on it, the car says this (30,000 miles/50,000km) and the NCT says 50,000km then run away.

You can view the MOT history online for free once you have the reg number.

The car is in kilometres. 2012 avensis. Its a little weird alright. Service history matches whats on the clock. But so does mot but thats in miles! Any link to that mot website?
    Cheers colm

The speedo should be reading miles. So whatever number is on the odometer should be miles. Don’t think the Avensis has a miles>km function.
The service history is key here anyway. I’d it said for example a service was done at 45000 miles, there’s hardly 50000km on it now.

It’s not uncommon for NCT tester to put the wrong units on a cert.

UK car is in miles, uk people do not do kms so all references are in miles, including service history. They see no need to specify miles as nobody there talks anything else. Therefore not weird, car is in miles or something is very wrong and not adding up.

the seller bought the silkscreen for the clocks and replaced it with one that has km on it only, this cost him about 25 pounds to do and knocked 20,000 miles off the car. The odometer is still counting in miles and is in miles, hasn't clocked the car but its not exactly honest either.

    Run away.

Even if he did that though, the digital odometer will still say xxxxxx miles or xxxxx km

Both are in the display, resolder one pin on the connector, done, have seen it done , only way to check is when the car is turned on first everything should light up on the display, both km and miles in that section, also make sure the digits infront of the 5 turned on, saw some cars with the 2 segments of the '1' infront of 150,000 turned off

That’s a proper matrix display though.
