Too soon to leave job

    Hi I have been in my current job 3years I just recently got a significant salary increase. However a dream job has come up abroad, I have been waiting to get a job offer for this particular job abroad for over a year. I do plan to return home and ideally keep the door open with my current company... However if I leave so soon after this large increase will it completely sour things and ruin any future chance with my current employer?

    Its hard to say how your current employer will react if you were to leave. Only advice i can give is prioritize yourself over your employer. He wont loose sleep if you pass up the oppertunity that is in front of you, you might regret it though.

    Go for it.....I always follow the same thinking in these types of situations.....your boss would do exactly the same, they havent gotten to where they are without putting their career first

    Its like having your cake and eating it. I dont think it can be done.
    Either you go for the new job, leaving your old job in a pleasant but professional way, or stay and say goodbye to an opportunity to pursue something you seem to have hoped to do for a while.

    You can always come back from.abroad you.just migjt not be able to get your old job back or even get a job in your old company. Thats a decision only you can make. Good luck

    A friend of mine left her job after 18 months, her boss threw a massive hissey fit and was basically horrible to her for her notice period. She was really taken aback and was not expecting that reaction.
    She was moving from Australia to London, not exactly going to a competitor down the road. He even told her she should take the weekend to reconsider....as if she just decided to up and move to the other side of the world on a whim.

    Anyway your companys reaction will tell you if the door is open to come back. She never wants to set foot in her old company again.

    Take the new job and just be honest with your current employer.
    Tell them it is a dream position which you might not get the chance again. Make it clear you valued the time working there and leave on good terms.

    People leave jobs all the time and unless you screw them over its not taken personally.

    Something I’ve learned over the years is that employees always think they are more important than an employer thinks they are.

    I see it time and time again; people wondering how their employer will cope if they quit/take sick leave/take holidays.

    I’ve also seen people full sure that if they threatened to leave that an employer would make a counter offer and all the employer said was “I wish you well in your new endeavours”.

    What I learned: no one is irreplaceable.

    Take your dream role, aim to leave on good terms. Even if you can’t, by the time you come back, the people who were pissed that you left might not even still be with the company and you can touch base with their replacement with a clean slate.
