Adult Dependant

    Hi folks,

I am writing for advice. My mother is in a bad way physically. She has had numerous operations in recent years on her arms and hands. She works in a manual job. I don't know why her doctor has not signed her off. The doctor has told her to leave work previously but has not actually signed her off for any type of disability allowance. It is not an option to just leave work and have no income. My dad earns barely above minimum and neither have a private pension. I am going to go with her to the doctor soon (she needs yet another operation) just even as support as I know she lacks confidence around more educated people and won't speak up. I would have thought she would be entitled to disability allowance at this point and it sounds like if the doctor did previously tell her to leave work that she should be.

The only other alternative I can think of for her is to just leave 'voluntarily' and claim her 9 months stamps. She has worked all her life. My dad will be of state pension age in the coming years and I think he could claim for her as an adult dependant then - would that be correct?

I'm trying to look into all possible options for her as I'm sick of seeing her in pain and, frankly, I am worried. I need to help her out but unfortunately my own job isn't great financially.

    Any advice appreciated. Thank you.

If she has been working and is no longer fit for work on a long term basis then she should be looking for Invalidity Pension which is not means tested as it is based on her prsi contributions. This can take her up to pension age where she will qualify for a contributory pension at the maximum rate.

If she does not meet the prsi requirements then she will have to go for Disability Allowance which is means tested so her husband's income and any saving etc. will be taken into account. As with IP this is a long term thing, she will have to be reckoned unfit for work for at least a year into the future.

If her illness is only a short term thing i.e. less than one year then she will have to opt for Illness Benefit which is also prsi based.

For all of these 3 options she will need her GP to complete application forms so if he has not signed her off yet maybe he/she thinks she is not sufficiently ill as to be considered unfit for work. In that case she will not be granted any of these payments unless she gets another GP to say that she is unfit for work.
