Hi all I’m considering buying one of these. I am aware that mark vi golfs of various types have copious potential problems. The above mentioned car is available with under 84000 mls and I’m very confident of its history being good.

Can anyone in the vw know say if I’m taking a big gamble here for any reason ? In my understanding these particular type golfs aren’t frequently mentioned for known issues compared to the dsg ones, 1.4 tsi or 1.6 tdi ones but just thought I’d see if any further yay or nay advice available here....

    Thanks in advance.

    Bump

Going to see it later, anyone got any knowledge at all please ? I’m obviously going to apply limerick mans advice in general from his post about buying a used car but if anyone has any cautions about the specific model I’d appreciate it, cheers.

Good reliable car as far as I know just normal dpf filter and egr issues like all modern diesels.

Thanks, hope it’ll work out so.

They are fairly ok as am overall car. Sounds like a UK car you're looking at? If so be doubly sure of its history and have an eye under it for corrosion in excess of the norm.

The engines are prone to EGR trouble and injector trouble the same as the 1.6's but aside from that are capable of doing a high mileage with relative ease. That 2.0 is also an EA189 engine, so either has had or could be due an emissions update, so weight up the pros and cons of that.

If it hasn't had a timing belt, it's overdue now (5 years or 210k kms). Low mileage cars that tend to have done mostly town driving can suffer from a heavy clutch pedal, meaning you will need a replacement clutch kit and possibly master cylinder. The pedal should be soft and free, if the pedal has resistance or is difficult to push, make allowances for a clutch kit. Keep your eyes peeled for wear on the inner shoulders of the two front tyres as this can be an indication of worn rearmost lower wishbone brackets, which these are prone to aswell.

The air conditioning compressor can fail on these too and it's at least €600 for a new one afaik. Make sure the air con is blasting out cold air.

Great stuff thanks. Yeah belt and pump were done just last December thankfully. Also while it was a UK import, even though I’m buying off a dealer, I happen know that another local man was the previous owner for at least 2 years and as far as I can see he simply traded up to a newer Passat.

Don’t know him to speak to personally but was thinking about asking him about it for extra assurance as it should be no skin off his nose but don’t want him worried I’m a weird stalker, lol.

Thanks everyone for contributing so far.
