Who buys at the mart

Was selling cattle yesterday at the mart in Kilkenny and got thinking on the way home, who actually buys the cattle and where do they end up?

The only people I see bidding are the 12-15 lads on the ring side that bid on everything. They are there week in and week out. They hardly buy for themselves?

Then there’s the guy in every mart, he’s there to buy tue biggest screws at the cheapest prices he can, limping, lumps, half blind, stunted growth, covered in mange - these guys don’t care as long as it’s dirt cheap. I can’t imagine what sort of zoo their herd test is.

Usually down the front waving his arm in a clockwise motion like a windmill when he sees a screw on the scales.

The funny thing is some of these guys supply the zoo with these screws!!!
Is it not lucky every mart has some one there to buy up these screws

A lot of farmers buy cattle to finish them, ourselves included - It always cracks me up that people like Teagasc and IFJ think that beef farmers are all sucklers farmers - the beef world revolves around sucklers in their eyes.  I wouldn't mind by half the beef killed every year has nothing to do with sucklers

I had a dealer spend a day in the mart one time to buy cattle for me at the end of the day I got a print out of what he bought. I went up beside him at the ring side and started waving the print out he quickly ripped it out of my hand and was like a bull one of the other bidders asked me did I buy many 😀😀😀

Some of them might keep a few for themselves but they're mostly buying for other people.
They buy finished cattle for factories, cull cows, stores and weanlings for farmers and finishers.

One man could be buying for 5/6 different people at a time. Different times of year for different stock for all sorts. Buy for orders of X at certain weight, buy for people only wanting stock to keep the payments coming in, buy for finishers or animals to finish off grass. Anything that seemed a decent bit of value they'd usually keep for themselves.
Used to have numerous accounts in the marts for different buyers so we'd put all the heavy stock in one, light heifers in another, bullocks in another etc, easier when settling in final accounts at the end of the day.

    +1
You know why we are not considered beef farmers? Because if Teagasc started buying stores in the mart for finishing word would get out and they would get screwed on the purchase price and wouldn't be able to give aqurate figures as to what finishers make.

How do they settle up at the end of mart day? Do the cattle go straight into the dealers clients herd numbers and how do they pay?

A sale wouldn't be closed til the following day so majority of the stock would be switched over but the limit would usually be midday the following business day, differed in each mart though, depending on when the days the sale was held.
Few years now since I worked in them but delicate see-saw/balance of credit, no cattle go into herd if there wasn't a cheque taking a certain balance off etc. So could be paying off a balance from 2 weeks ago etc but would be ok'ed with the manager beforehand. Only so far you can push before you offend but only so far they could take the piss with credit. Usually posted in or sent with the buyer, though I ended up getting a few here and there if i met them around the place.

They'd have to go straight into the clients account or it'd be another movement,
A neighbour uses an agent and has accounts at the marts that the cattle come from....agent then gets transport plus comm.

Saves hanging around the mart for a whole day, but can be nice to do your own selection
