Not sure if this is "normal" so I'd like to know what you think.
I have 38k km on my car, 141 Nissan Leaf imported from UK.
    With 6.6kw charger on board.
    Just lost first bar.
    Mainly use L2 chargers/ESB chargers.
average 200-250km per week, 50/50% on M50 / local roads. I'm carefull driver
Is there a problem with my Leaf or is it just normal degradation level?
Don't have LeafSpy to check my car now.

    To lose a bar at 38k sounds early, we have a 142, 50k+ haven't lost a bar.

Have you details of the charging history before you bought it? A lot of fast charging could result in this

How so, thought we were past this and that fast charging is no harm at all, taxis etc.

As far as I can make out, the consensus seems to be that loss of bars is more influenced by age than mileage or fast charging. I guess at 4.5 years old it's not that unbelievable that the first bar would go?

Nun 141 lost its first bar at 73k km this year too.
It has a high number of fast chargers relative to other cars too.

You need to get LeafSpy. Tis pin-the-tail-on-the-donkey stuff otherwise.

    +1

I bought my car in March 2017 with 87% SOH and it dropped to 85% SOH this year. That’s when you loose the first bar I believe.

So even though I lost a bar, I didn’t loose any expected range based on the SOH when I bought it.

can i ask how many bars are there in total? What % is lost with this bar?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,295 ✭✭✭n97 mini

    12. First is lost at 85% SOH, the rest are with each 7.5% drop.

I'd like to get LeafSpy for my car, but from what I've read, getting a dongle that works is a bit like on the tail on the donkey too!

I contacted many sellers on ebay and amazon that looked like they were selling a suitable dongle, but the ones that replied to me said they wouldn't work with an EV.

Can anyone share a link to one that they've bought and know works, please?

I should have one somewhere at home. Definitely worked in the Leaf we had. I'll let you know this evening if I can find it

Thanks for that. I have an iPhone, though, am I right in thinking I need to get a wifi dongle not the BT one?

Normal enough based on age. Mileage doesn’t matter so much.

I have used a wifi equivalent of my one and it also worked. That should be good for iPhone

On the SpeakEV UK forums, folks there are losing their first bar now with the Leaf 1.5 - it appears it's primarily an age thing. Good news is that most don't notice an appreciable drop in range because of it.

Edit: I gave up on using Leafspy around 6 months after getting my Leaf and decided to forget about obsessing about battery health (since there is sweet FA you can do about it) and just enjoy the car. Really glad I did that.

I picked up this wifi dongle for my 151 L24 and it works perfectly with LeafSpy.

    https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B073SPLR87/

The iOS version of the app is around €20 I think. I bought the android version on Amazon App Store for half the price and use it with an android tablet I have at home.

My 151 L24 is hovering around 87/86/85 percent SOH at the moment. I didn't get a SOH when I bought it last year so I don't know it deteriorate significantly prior to or during my ownership.

I know I had a habit of charging to 100% in the afternoon/early evening and then I have may only use it little for a few days. I think sitting at a high state of charge for a day or two or three even might have contributed to lower than expected SOH. I now only charge to 80% unless I need the extra range or maybe once a week or so to balance the cells. I hope by doing this I'll be able to reduce the rate of deterioration.

Well they wouldnt notice a drop in range, as they are going from 85.0000% SOH to 84.999999% SOH
The range drop would have been noticed in the months before. Gradually.

This is true. New the GOM will show 164km, but at 85% the GOM will show more like 145km. That's 19km in 36-48 months, or less than 1km per month.

Surprised that hasn't sold. Presumably you can have that for around the €3.5k mark. Perfect second local car for school runs etc. After you buy it, it will cost about EUR30-EUR50 per month in total (tax, insurance and a few cents in electricity)

It'd be perfect for anyone who lived 30km or less from work and had work charging.
    Or a school run car.
It's not going to depreciate much more given the battery intrinsic value.

There is about 13kWh of usable capacity left in the car. A Tesla Powerwall has 13.5kWh and costs €7k!

I know the powerwall has a few extra bits 'n bobs to connect it to a house but still, it gives an idea what the battery is worth.

If you had the expertise to take out the battery and connect it to your house it would be great value but not too many have that ability.

My leaf is approaching 70k miles, SOH is floating in between 86 and 87.5, i mostly charge to 80%.. mostly.
I was a bit disappointed when I used the leaf spy first only 2 months ago when I saw an SOH of just under 86, a few quick chargers has raised the SOH slightly but am going to stick to home charging as much as I can, i also read that SOH should go up during colder spells so maybe in the next few months we may see an increase in SOH, although leaf spy doesn't seem to be an exact science so who knows.

In my own experience it varies by about 5%.

FWIW this OBD/Bluetooth dongle works flawlessly for me with LeafSpy on iOS - https://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B00YVHGTBM?ref=em_1p_4_ti&ref_=pe_55840_353816700
