Tax and insurance on new 2nd hand car

Hi Folks,
  Just picked up a new (for me) 2nd hand car. Insurance is transferred but waiting on new disk. Tax was out on the car in July. 
I've sent off change of ownership just waiting for logbook so I can tax.  Thing is I hate driving without the disks. Is there any leeway given?

IIRC you have 10 days to get the discs after purchasing. Check the Motor tax website for the change of ownership to appear and then you can request a PIN and tax the car.

Change of ownership can be delayed, one time (comming up to Xmas reason?) It took me 6weeks.Go into tax office with vin no. and ins. no.I'd say they would tax it for you? can also try it online.

Thanks a mil. Im watching the motor tax website to see when it is changed. Then will call them. 
I can't do online at the moment as it's not in my name yet and disk would be sent to previous owner.
