Hi so I'm looking to buy a watch for the brothers 40th in a couple of months. I spotted this online and thought it was a good deal https://www.fallers.ie/shop/watches/gents-citizen-red-arrows-skyhawk/
I know nothing about watches and I was just looking for an opinion on the watch or if anyone knew of an alternative watch for a out €450/500.

Thanks for all your help in advance!

I love eco drives, wore one daily for 6 years amd it never missed a beat. Been retired now for the most part until it fits my son! At that price range though you will get a nice automatic Tissot or even a Steinhart. Tons of great watches in that price range.

What style of watch does he like?

    Hi,

Thanks for your reply he normally would go for watches with metal or steal bracelet strap but besides that I don't know much more.

If you're happy buying online, that'll give you a lot of options. That Citizen is a nice watch, but as it has a lot of stuff on the dial, it may not be for everyone. I'd probably go for a simpler look.

I'm a big Steinhart fan, but I've come to think that most their models are probably a tiny bit bigger than they ought to be. The 39mm diver may be a safe option, unless he's got bigger arms.

This Seiko looks like a nice all rounder. If you think he might prefer the sportier look, then Seiko do lots of really nice divers well within budget.

Nice looking Tissot, but possibly too dressy?

I'd vote to stay away from the Royal Air Force! No harm to them, and to each their own – but I personally couldn't wear something associated with the Royal Air Force, and that's not coming from a place of bigotry or hatred or anything like that – I just couldn't. Also, as somebody has already alluded to – it's a very busy watch, I know some people love that – but equally some would seriously dislike it too. It's really a love/hate kinda watch – in my opinion.

I don't know if I can help you all that much OP – but here are a few watches I personally would happily pay five hundred for...

    One.
    Two.
    Three.
    Four.
    Five.
    Six.

And best of luck! – I wish I had a sibling that would buy me a watch!!

Problem is, everyone has different ideas on what they want. Some people would love the watch you linked, I'd love it as a gift, but if I had €500 to spend on a watch I wouldn't choose it.

I'd go for something like this:
    Cocktail Time
    Cocktail time espresso
    Jazzmaster

If you are not sure of the "style" he is into, I'd say best avoid the busy faced watches such as what you originally pitched. I'd suggest keeping it a little more simple. Your budget will get you a very good midrange watch and probably an automatic. Can't go far wrong with a Seiko, Tissot or a Hamilton. Check out creation watches as already suggested. I've bought a few off them over the years and had no issues, including a relatively expensive Tag. Rightly or wrongly, they don't declare the real value so if you do get stung by customs as I have always been in the past, you won't pay much more than about 30 euro and most of that is a ridiculous handling charge of about 20 euro for DHL. Admittedly this was 3 years ago so maybe things are different but probably not by much.

I really like Hamilton's but the problem with them (and the likes of Steinhart) is that unless you know your watches, they won't really mean much to you. You know your brother better than anyone here giving advice so you'll know whether this was an issue or not. i.e. is he into brand recognition. But if he does know a bit about watches, something like a Hamilton (which anyone with even a passing interest might know about) would be a real treat to receive.....swiss made and really interesting pedigree....very individual designs also....mine is a pilot watch which is quite quirky amongst the endless diver options out there....

    Good luck with it!

Here's a few hammy's off creation, all with bracelets....I have the same as the pilot but in a off white dial and brown leather strap, its a really nice watch.....one thing to also consider is wrist size as there can be a wide range of sizes out there....I have 7.25 inch wrist so I get away with anything from 41mm to 48mm which I have in my collection. 43mm is my sweet spot....so if you know your brother has skinny wrists, I wouldn't go much higher than 42mm but if he has chunky wrists, he can wear what he wants depending on his taste.....try some one if you have similar sized wrists so you know what might look silly on him....

I’d vote for that seiko if it was for me. Lovely looking watch. Damn you now I’m tempted :)
